Prescott boys have battle looming with SCC

The Prescott Cardinals traveled to Osceola to play the 1-7 Chieftains. Parker Nielsen, Jacob Doffing and Jordan Malmov led the Cardinals to an 83-52 victory. The Cardinals jumped out to a 46-26 lead in the first half and it was too much for the Chieftains to overcome. Nielsen and Doffing both shot an efficient 9-12 from the floor and the team converted on 12 of their 15 attempts from the charity stripe. Nielsen dished out 10 assists to go along with six rebounds, two steals and a block with only three turnovers. Doffing contributed seven rebounds, four assists and swatted six shots. Malmov made three of four three point attempts on his way to finishing with thirteen points.

Head Coach Nick Johnson shared the keys to victory against the Chieftains.

“I thought we played great team offense and defense. Offensively we were more creative and scored in a variety of ways. Defensively we made them uncomfortable in the half court which led to steals and fast break opportunities. An all around very well played game,” Johnson said.

Looking back to the Cardinal’s holiday games, Johnson said, “I thought both teams we played will prepare us come playoff basketball. It’s a large reason we enjoy playing in the Hastings tournament. It shows us where we’re at against much larger schools.”

Johnson went on to say, “I definitely still think we’re trying to figure things out. It’s a long season and sometimes it takes longer than expected. I continue to see a ton of potential with this group. When we start putting all the pieces together I think we’ll be a tough team to beat. We need to continue to work hard and stay disciplined.”

Ten games into the season, Nielsen leads the Middle Border Conference with 28.2 points per game, eight ahead of Mason Anderson of Ellsworth in second place. Doffing’s 18.7 points per game are fourth, only a tenth of a point behind New Richmond’s CJ Campbell.

Doffing leads the conference in rebounds, grabbing over 10 per contest so far this season.

Nielson and Doffing don’t do it all by themselves, though. Jordan Malmov, Dylan Malmov and Mason Holte are all averaging over eight points per game on the year.

Walker Lenz, Holte and Nielsen all average over four rebounds per game.

The Cardinals have a big game Tuesday, January 14th when they host 7-1 Saint Croix Central.

“They’re very athletic and physical,” Johnson said. “We’ll need to continue to stay disciplined on both ends of the floor. I think handling pressure and limiting turnovers will have a huge impact on the outcome of the game.”
