Track and Field
Maleah Petersen had a performance to remember for Ellsworth at Sectionals, qualifying for State in both the shot put and discus. Petersen broke the school record shot put by two feet with a 39-foot, 1.25-inch toss. The boys 4x200 relay of Brady Mitchell, Levi Nelson, Michael Holst and Keegan Stahlke are headed to State as well.
Prescott had a solid group of qualifiers, sending Ethan West in the 200-meter and pole vault, Will Packard in the 300-meter hurdles, Kyra Dix in the 3,200-meter and the boys 4x400 (Jack Kreager, Kobe Russell, Packard and Andrew Russell) and 4x100 (Andrew Lesso, Andrew Russell, Wyatt Budworth and West) relay teams.
River Falls sent many athletes to State, earning qualifications from Ty Bauschelt (high jump), Quin Andrews (800), Blake Schneider (pole vault), Abigail Treichel (high jump), Bailee Bishop (300 hurdles), Olive Halverson (1600), 4x400 boys (Jack Silloway, Charlie Burke, Andrews and Bauschelt), 4x200 boys (Silloway, Burke, Bauschelt and Mason Novak), 4x800 boys (Clark Werwie, Jonah Majerus, Owen Koepke and Andrews) and 4x200 girls (Isabelle Russell, Mackenzie Schmidt, Jayla Johnson and Tirfe L’Allier).
Brewer Link held it down for EPC, qualifying for State in the high jump. The girls 4x100 relay team of Lillian Pullen, Allie Sauve, Polly Webb and Andrea Arredondo tied the school’s record time of 52.54 seconds at Sectionals, but missed out on qualification.
State track takes place over the weekend in La Crosse.
Boys Golf
Prescott won its first Regional Championship in school history, beating St. Croix Central by four strokes. For Sectionals, the Cardinals head to Hayward on June 4. Prescott scored 328 to win, Ellsworth (361) took sixth and SV/EPC (410) took 10th of 10. Ellsworth and SV/EPC missed Sectional qualification.
The River Falls boys are also still in the running, placing second at the Regional to move on to the Wausau West Sectional on June 4.
Softball
Prescott made it eight wins in a row and a Regional Championship on the week, beating Nekoosa 9-1 May 27 to open the playoffs and Somerset 3-0 May 29 to take the title. Senior Rory Zuehlsdorf pitched brilliantly, tossing complete games in each postseason battle.
Rib Lake got the best of Elmwood/Plum City in its second playoff game, winning 12-2 in five innings. The Wolves got matched up with the No. 2 seed, and it was too much to overcome. EPC did finish the year strong, marking a good start for a young roster.
Spring Valley found itself in a similar boat as EPC, taking on No. 1 seed Thorp after winning the playoff opener. Thorp took the game in four innings with a 16-1 win.
Ellsworth picked up a 9-5 win off the back of some middle inning rallies. Pitcher Aliza Acker helped herself out by belting a homer. Ellsworth then traveled to Rice Lake with revenge on its mind after back-to-back seasons ended at the hands of the Warriors. Rice Lake did not let it happen, pouncing on Ellsworth to win 10-2.
River Falls was outslugged by Wisconsin Rapids in the playoff opener 11-1, ending the season for the Wildcats.
Baseball
Spring Valley was the lone Pierce County team to play in and win a playoff game on the week, scratching out a 3-2 win over Eau Claire Immanuel Lutheran on May 29. The Cardinals keep their run going at a 15-1 Loyal team on June 3.
The Division 1 postseason starts later than the rest, but River Falls drew a matchup with vengeance on the menu for the softball team, hosting Wisconsin Rapids on June 3. River Falls closed the year 13-9 after splitting with Menomonie and Wisconsin Rapids is 13-10.
Prescott baseball joined its softball team, winning a seventh in a row by beating Fall Creek 10-5. The Cardinals earned a playoff bye and will face 10-12 West Salem to keep the memorable season alive.
EPC’s season came to an end in the playoff opener, dropping the game to Cashton 5-1. Ellsworth also dropped its playoff opener, falling just short in a 5-4 loss to St. Croix Central.
Girls Soccer
River Falls ended the conference tournament against two of the Big Rivers Conference’s best, beating Hudson on May 27 and losing to Eau Claire Memorial 4-0 on May 29. The Wildcats face Altoona/Fall Creek to open the Division 2 playoffs. River Falls is the region’s No. 1 seed.
Boys Tennis
Losses to West Salem, Osceola and La Crosse Logan at Subsectionals ended the season for Ellsworth. River Falls got past Subsectionals; however, the team was then eliminated at Sectionals later in the week.
