Around the County: Sampair sets EPC school record discus throw

Prescott has won eight of nine games after sweeping Baldwin-Woodville 8-4, 7-4 and Platteville 13-6, 10-0. Their winning ways have given them a 9-3 conference record, good for a one-game lead, and a 16-4 overall record.

Elmwood/Plum City had a nice penultimate week of the regular season, dominating Colfax 13-0, beating Eau Claire Immanuel Lutheran 5-4 and losing to Boyceville 4-2. Senior Lucas Glaus tossed five shutout innings in a complete game against Colfax. EPC is 5-14 on the year and 2-10 in conference.

River Falls swept a double-header against Rice Lake 5-2, 12-3 May 13. The Wildcats are building momentum into the postseason with three straight wins, improving to 11-6 overall and 6-4 in Big Rivers play.
Spring Valley’s lone game on the week was a 12-7 loss to Durand-Arkansaw as a matchup with Elk Mound was postponed. The Cardinals are locked into the middle portion of the Dunn-St. Croix standings, holding onto an 8-7 record (5-5 in conference).

Osceola got the best of Ellsworth in a pair of pitching duals 4-1 and 2-1. Ellsworth has two matchups with Prescott coming up on May 20 and 22, closing out the team’s conference schedule. The Panthers are 6-12 with a 3-9 Middle Border record.

 

Softball

The long-awaited showdowns between Ellsworth and Prescott went down, but first, Prescott took care of business against River Falls 12-2. Rory Zuehlsdorf homered in the win. Prescott then beat Ellsworth 16-8 and 19-7. Zuehlsdorf, Leah French and Talli Roth homered in the 19-7 win. Prescott capped off the perfect week with a 5-3 win over Hastings. Ellsworth also lost 7-3 against Grantsburg on May 12. Prescott finished a game out of the conference title at 11-3 and 19-6 overall. Ellsworth is still firmly in the conference’s top half, sitting at 9-5 in conference and 15-8 overall.

River Falls’ 1-3 week moved the squad to 9-15 on the year with a 1-11 conference record. After the 12-2 loss to Prescott, the Wildcats lost 6-3 and 10-6 to Eau Claire Memorial before beating Northwood/Solon Springs 13-3.

EPC went 0-3 with a 15-0 loss to Colfax, 9-0 loss to Eau Claire Immanuel Lutheran and 11-0 loss to Boyceville. EPC is 5-16 on the year with a 2-11 conference record. After a 15-0 loss to Durand-Arkansaw and 11-0 loss to Elk Mound, Spring Valley is 2-14 overall and 1-12 in conference.

 

Boys Golf

River Falls took fifth of eight at a Big Rivers Conference meet in Menomonie on May 12. Senior Connor O’Malley tied for seventh with a 39. The Wildcats did extremely well in Rice Lake on May 15, taking second of 20 teams with a 311. Junior Jaxon Flanagan tied for second and junior Ryan Swanson tied for eighth.

Prescott took second with a 163 and Ellsworth took eighth with a 192 in Somerset on May 12. Prescott senior Tyler Reiter tied for second with a 38 and senior Sam Vesperman tied for fourth with a 39. The Middle Border Conference Tournament is scheduled for May 19 in Amery.

 

Track and Field

EPC and Spring Valley were at the Colfax Meet on May 13. EPC’s Aurora Sampair broke the school record in discus throwing with a toss of 110 feet, 11 inches. The two are in the Mondovi Regional on May 27.

The River Falls boys took second and girls third of five at the Hudson Tune Up on May 12. The Big Rivers Conference Meet is May 19 at Chippewa Falls and the Menomonie Regional is May 27.

Ellsworth competed in Osceola on May 13. The Middle Border Conference meet is May 20 at St. Croix Central. They then go to the D2 Regional in Viroqua on May 27 with Prescott.

 

Boys Tennis

River Falls had a successful week, beating Ashland 4-1 and La Crosse Logan 4-3, but losing to Altoona 6-0. Ellsworth took a 5-2 loss to Lakeland Union and a 4-3 loss to Black River Falls. Conference events are almost here as Ellsworth will compete in the MBC Tournament on May 20 at St. Croix Central and River Falls competes in the BRC Tournament at Eau Claire Memorial the same day.

 

Girls Soccer

After cruising to a 3-0 win over Rice Lake on May 13, River Falls suffered its first conference loss of the year, losing 2-0 to Hudson on May 15. The Wildcats are 8-4-2 overall and 6-1-1 in conference after making it through one cycle of the conference gauntlet.
