PRESCOTT — In rural Wisconsin, it’s family first at all times, and luckily for Prescott football they are both a family figuratively and literally.
The Rohl/Fiedler family has become almost synonymous with Prescott football, with brothers Will and Charlie Rohl teaming up with their cousins Harvey Fiedler, Henry Rohl, John Rohl and Leo Rohl.
The Rohls have been major contributors to one of Prescott’s best seasons, and to Head Coach Jordan Hansen it is no secret why.
“They’re great kids, hard workers,” Hansen said. “A lot of them are working on the farm in the summer and they bring that grind mentality.”
In Friday night’s playoff game against Seymour, the Rohls made their presence felt with Will and Charlie picking up sacks and Henry getting an interception and 36 receiving yards. The crew has been impactful for the Cardinals all year long, and the playoffs were a moment they have waited for.
“It’s really fun actually,” Will said. “Just playing football with the guys you always grew up with.”
When you are playing with your family on the football field, many aspects of the game come naturally. There will always be a sense of chemistry and togetherness when they take the field together.
“It’s not really awkward when you’re on your first day and half the team is your cousin,” Charlie said.
For them, it is just like playing backyard football during a family reunion. They feel a certain chemistry from playing together for so long.
Will and Charlie have to be especially connected on the field, as they line up right next to each other on the offensive line with Charlie at center and Will at guard. All positions require some sort of cohesion, but those who play the line know it takes a much stronger bond.
Along with the family making up a significant portion of the roster, they also take up a significant portion of the stands. The love is felt every time they take the field as they are not just representing their team but their family.
“At every game, the stands are like 50% Rohls,” Will said. “The entire family’s there, so it’s really fun.”
Prescott is in the middle of a season that has established an identity and put the team back on the map after not making the playoffs in back-to-back years. The entire team has taken pride in the great year, especially the seniors who have been there for every step.
“It means a lot,” Will, a senior, said. “Recent years we know that we haven’t been very known for going to the playoffs, so it means a bunch to be able to try and switch the program around and finally make the playoffs after four years.”
To keep the playoff run going, Prescott needs to rely on the family values of everyone doing their part and no one playing selfishly.
“It’s going to take for all of us to do our job,” Will said. “Selfless service, everybody’s got a job to do.”
Prescott takes on 10-0 No. 1 seed Freedom on Friday in Freedom for the WIAA level two playoffs.
