Ellsworth’s Halverson headed to Hamline for basketball

ELLSWORTH — Senior Morgan Halverson, Ellsworth’s leading scorer this season, signed to Hamline University to play for the women’s basketball team.

“It was the team at Hamline, the coaching staff made me feel very welcomed, the size of the school, the cost of the school and the competition of basketball within their conference,” Halverson said.

After losing a large senior class in the offseason, the Panthers have relied on players like Halverson to step up and continue to build the team’s culture, and they have done that. There have been some speed bumps along the road, but Ellsworth’s younger players are starting to hone their crafts at the varsity level.

“She gives us a lot of leadership but also gives us a lot of energy,” Ellsworth Head Coach Haylee Yaeger said. “She’s a great post player. She’s very solid, very strong.”

Halverson is averaging in double-figures scoring as well as an impressive 7.3 rebounds per game.

For some, the college transition can be daunting. Halverson is not worried, as she believes her hard work can hurdle the challenges along the way.

“I have a good work ethic,” Halverson said. “I know it’s going to take a lot of work, but I’m willing to put it all in.”

As the team is approaching the winter break to signal that the remaining games are numbered, Halverson’s main mission is to help the team trend in the right direction.

“I want to leave a mark on Ellsworth,” Halverson said. “It doesn’t have to be a bunch of records broken, but I want to make an impact on the program. Kind of leave the program going up in a way rather than going down.”
