“What’s on your radar” is one of my favorite segments on the Dave Ryan in the Morning radio show on KDWB. The four show hosts take turns telling the audience things that have caught their attention, ranging from recipes to books to restaurants to apps and more. I thought this week we could use something a bit more lighthearted, so I’m going to give it a whirl.

Book: Right now, I’m reading “Don’t Talk to Strangers” by Amanda Kyle Williams. It’s about a private investigator named Keye Street who is investigating the deaths of two teens 10 years apart in a creepy town called Whisper, Ga. She’s an ex-FBI profiler with a smart mouth and a knack for figuring out tough crimes. Have I mentioned that I’m obsessed with true crime stories? I know that may sound morbid, but it’s not because of the gore and horror. I like to learn how investigators piece together and gather evidence to solve complex cases.

Podcast: Being that I’m a true crime junkie, I absolutely love two new podcasts I’ve found: “Dark Downeast” and “Park Predators.” “Dark Downeast” explores mostly unsolved mysteries in New England, such as missing persons, homicides, and even a mass arsenic poisoning at a country church. “Park Predators” focuses on crimes that have occurred in national and state parks and wildlife areas. I highly recommend both. The journalists provide thorough research, which I appreciate. I do a lot of driving, thanks to my work with the paper and hauling kids around, so podcasts break up the monotony.

Food: I’m trying to eat healthy (easier said than done) and I recently discovered chive-flavored cottage cheese. Talk about a way to dress up a boring “diet” food. Yum!

Football: My husband is defensive coordinator for the 6-0 Baldwin-Woodville Blackhawks (I’m sorry Ellsworth fans, though I love the Panthers too), and all I hear from him and our two youngest sons is football talk. Football dominates the conversation 24/7 in our household. Most of the time my husband is home, he’s in front of his computer dissecting film with his yellow legal pad scratching notes. If he’s not watching film, he and the boys are watching football on TV. They’re in fantasy leagues and babble on about who is injured, stats, trades, blah blah blah. I know I should be more interested, but my eyes tend to glaze over. I love my Packers, but I could care less about any other NFL team.

Decluttering: There’s nothing to inspire someone to declutter their own home as much as emptying the house of a loved one. Our family is in the middle of going through the house my grandparents lived in (and my mom after them) since my mom has moved to assisted living. My ambitious aunt has done most of the work (God bless her), but I try to help when I can. The saying “you can’t take it with you” really makes sense now. Once this house is done, we have to empty my husband’s grandparents’ house in eastern Wisconsin and get it ready to sell. The basement there is full of stuff from floor to ceiling, so I’m not looking forward to it.

Fall: Fall is my favorite time of year, though the weather this year is not cooperating. Bring on the cooler temperatures and leave the summer heat behind. Eighties in October is unacceptable. Call me cliché, but I want to drink my pumpkin spice coffee in a cozy sweatshirt in front of a blazing bonfire, surrounded by colorful leaves. If I wore a sweatshirt this week, I’d die of heatstroke and that would be the end of fall for me.

I would love to hear what’s on your radar. If you have any book recommendations or fun stories to share, email me at sarah@piercecountyjournal.news
