Gov. Evers supports International Dark Sky Week in Wisconsin

Gov. Tony Evers has officially proclaimed April 21–28, 2025 as International Dark Sky Week in Wisconsin, joining communities and advocates around the globe in raising awareness about the importance of preserving our natural night skies.

The proclamation recognizes the value of dark skies to Wisconsin’s natural environment, human health, wildlife, and heritage — and encourages residents, businesses, and local governments to reduce light pollution by using responsible outdoor lighting practices.

International Dark Sky Week, founded in 2003, is observed annually in April as a worldwide event to inspire people to reconnect with the night and consider the impacts of excessive artificial light at night.

“We’re grateful to Gov. Evers for supporting this important observance,” said Samantha Saeger, Chapter President of DarkSky Wisconsin. “Wisconsin is home to remarkable and treasured natural resources, with countless opportunities for outdoor recreation. By being thoughtful about how and where we use light, we can help protect these resources for future generations.”

Throughout the week, DarkSky Wisconsin will focus on raising awareness about light pollution and encouraging simple actions that make a big difference — like using warmer-colored, fully shielded lighting and turning off unnecessary lights at night.

The proclamation underscores Wisconsin’s commitment to safeguarding its scenic beauty, ecosystems, and quality of life by encouraging practices that preserve the wonder of starry night skies.
