Mayor's Message: Tolerance is crucial to our society

It is finally summer! After about nine months of cool, sometimes cold, and wet weather, we are finally into the heat - which is the best part of the year. Just remember to get out and enjoy it as much as possible as it will only be here for a short while. So, what should we talk about? There are so many options….

We could talk about the damaging effects of social media, and how it has a tendency to create platforms for negativity to flourish. I’m sure you have all seen the comment section on posts quickly become spaces full of arguments and disparaging comments, rather than fostering productive dialogue and spreading positivity. While it is the minority of folks who have the loudest and most critical of voices, I know most of us find it more enjoyable to read about the many great things going on in our city.

We could talk about road work, street closures, and the inconvenience it may sometimes create, but I know you all appreciate the road work we do. Consistent maintenance and construction help to lengthen the age of our roads and save us more money in the long run. Short-term detours lead to long-term improvements.

We could talk about the great job our police officers and city staff do to help those experiencing personal housing crisis. Staff aid in these instances by serving as short-term liaisons to connect people to the proper resources and service organizations.

We could talk about lots of things, but I think I want to talk about tolerance.

Tolerance is defined as willingness to accept feelings, habits, or beliefs that are different from your own.

In today's society, tolerance is more crucial than ever. We live in a world where people come from various backgrounds and beliefs. Tolerance means respecting and accepting these differences without harboring judgment or prejudice.

Tolerance doesn't mean we have to agree with everything or abandon our own principles. It means we acknowledge and respect others’ rights to hold differing beliefs and lifestyles from our own. This practice promotes a climate of mutual respect and understanding, which is something we can all agree we need more of throughout society.

Practicing tolerance allows people to understand and appreciate different perspectives, cultures, and beliefs, which creates a more communal society. It can prevent conflicts that arise from misunderstandings or differences in opinions by promoting peace and harmony. By being tolerant, people are better able to engage in meaningful dialogue and learn from one another, expanding their own knowledge and empathy.

We all have moments when it is hard to remember to be tolerant, particularly when we disagree with someone. In these instances, we just need to take a few deep breaths and remember to focus on trying to reach a place of understanding, in a respectful and kind manner.

We need to remember that not everyone we meet is as pleasant and easy-going as we are. I thought you would get a kick out of this bit of humor, after all the serious tolerance talk.

Do not forget that it is almost football season and the Packers are looking for another piece of hardware to add to their collection after 13 league championship wins. So sorry Viking fans, maybe next year. (We all know it won’t be next year either).

Remember get out and enjoy your city. Tell people about it and be proud of it

Go Pack Go!
