May Book Club, 5:30 p.m., Elmwood Public Library (111 N. Main St.) We will discuss two banned books: “Of Mice and Men” by John Steinbeck and “Forever” by Judy Blume.

Cookbook Club, 6:30 p.m., Plum City Public Library (611 Main St). This month make your favorite dish from “Whole Food Cooking Every Day” by Amy Chaplin and bring it to the club! Check out the book at the front desk.

SCV Genealogical Society Annual Meeting, 6:30 p.m., First National Bank of River Falls meeting room (104 E. Locust St., River Falls). Annual meeting first, followed by 7 p.m. program. The featured speaker is Bob Johnson, “An Introduction to Norwegian Genealogical Records,” covering the most important records for good research in Norway – church records, census records and bygdebøker—and from there move on to other helpful secondary sources. Among the sources discussed are the Norwegian National Archives (Arkivverket), Norway-Heritage, Oluf Rygh website, FamilySearch, MyHeritage ($), and Ancestry.com ($).

Ellsworth Lions Fundraiser, 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Food Stand, Nilssen’s Foods (157 E. Main St., Ellsworth). It’s the Summer Season Opener! The Ellsworth Lions will sell hot dogs and brats. All funds raised go to community projects.

Friday, May 19

Northwood Technical College Commencement Ceremony, 6:30 p.m., New Richmond High School (650 Richmond Way, New Richmond). Prior to the graduation ceremony, guests are invited to a reception from 4:30-5:30 p.m. at the New Richmond Northwood campus.

Elmwood High School & Eighth Grade Graduation, 7 p.m., Elmwood Football Field. Parade to follow.

Spring Valley High School Graduation, 7 p.m., Spring Valley Football Field. In the event of inclement weather, the event will be moved to the SVHS gym. Families are asked to bring their own chairs. Parking is allowed in Syverson Pool parking lot for handicapped visitors only. Email hornerm@springvalley.k12.wi.us to reserve a handicapped space.

Mooney’s Car Show & Bike Rally, 9 a.m., downtown Spring Valley. Line up starts at 9 a.m. Road closes at 11 a.m. Registration is $5. Every car and bike receives a dash plaque. Trophies in different categories.

Monday, May 29

Bay City Memorial Day Services will be held at 8 a.m. at Esdaile Cemetery, 8:30 a.m. at Hartland Methodist Cemetery, at 9 a.m. at Tabor Lutheran Cemetery, at 9:30 a.m. at Bay City Lakeshore, at 10 a.m. at Bay City Cemetery, at 10:45 a.m. at Trenton, at 11:30 a.m. at Diamond Bluff and at noon at Svea Lutheran. Guest speaker Pastor Al Aakre of Svea Lutheran will be in attendance at Trenton, Bay City Cemetery and Bay City Legion, along with the EMS band. A special ceremony will be held at a later date at the Bay City American Legion to dedicate the new veterans memorial. All are welcome.

Funds raised enrich and enhance learning opportunities for students. Enjoy great wine, delicious dinner, silent auction, live music, vineyard tours by wagon and more. Sunday, June 4

Ellsworth Lions Annual Fishing Derby, 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., Nugget Lake County Park (N4351 County Road HH, Plum City). Every child will be entered to win a kayak and other prizes. Trophies awarded for biggest bluegill, crappie and perch, plus smallest fish. Burgers, brats and hot dogs for purchase. Fishing equipment and lessons will be available.

Taste of River Falls, noon to 4 p.m., downtown River Falls (on Main Street between Maple and Locust). Participating businesses and nonprofits based in River Falls offer a taste of what it’s like to live in River Falls. Vendors, food, live music, and more!

2023 Community Safety Day, 4-7 p.m., Spring Valley Village Hall (E121 S. Second St.) Free family event where you can come and learn about safety, tour emergency and heavy equipment vehicles and meet some local heroes! New this year: Food trucks!

Showdown in Curdtown, 6:30 p.m., Pierce County Fairgrounds (364 N. Maple St., Ellsworth). Eight pulling classes attracting participants from across the nation. This event is the main fundraiser for the Ellsworth FFA Alumni.

Hague Memorial Pony Pull, 11 a.m., Elmwood Rod & Gun (N6433 Highway 72, Elmwood). Concessions onsite, 50/50 raffles all day.

Sunday, June 11

Sunday Brunch, 9 a.m. to noon, River Falls Moose Lodge 594 Moose Lodge (620 N. Clark St., River Falls). Buffet includes scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, hashbrowns, pancakes, French toast, biscuits and sausage gravy, plus a Bloody Mary and Bubbly bar. Funds raised will go toward the parking lot fundraiser.

East End Chalk Fest, 9 a.m., Broadway Street, Ellsworth. Join us for another fun year of colorful, beautiful chalk creations! Free registration for artists, who must bring their own chalk. Local history experts will be available for questions during the celebration.
