Boys Basketball
It looked like Elmwood/Plum City was going to drop its conference opener versus Mondovi on Thursday, falling behind 25-13 at the half. With the odds stacked against the Wolves, they rallied to win a 52-50 thriller. EPC stands at 2-1 overall and 1-0 in Dunn-St. Croix Conference play.
Spring Valley cruised to a 2-0 week, dominating their conference opener over Glenwood City 65-44 Thursday and coasting to a 43-32 win over Eau Claire Immanuel Lutheran on Saturday. The Cardinals are 3-1 overall and 1-0 in Dunn-St. Croix play.
River Falls lost a nailbiter to open conference play 71-67 against Menomonie Dec. 10, bouncing right back to beat Chippewa Falls 65-39 Friday. The Wildcats had three double figure scorers in the win, with Brody Graetz and Preston Johnson scoring 14 each and Eli Johnson adding 11. River Falls is now 2-1 overall and 1-1 in Big Rivers Conference play.
Ellsworth had a game everyone in attendance will remember for the rest of their lives Thursday at Altoona. After Gavin Klos made a three to take the lead with nine seconds to play, Altoona countered to take a two-point lead with a three of their own at 0.8 seconds to go. In need of a miracle, Nash Kuhl launched a pass to Georgle Rohl who fired from way downtown and got it to go for a 67-66 win. Ellsworth is now 2-1 overall and 1-1 in Middle Border Conference play.
Prescott made it look easy again, cruising to a 66-51 win over Elk Mound Dec. 9 and a 55-43 win over Somerset on Friday. With five wins in a row, the Cardinals are 5-1 overall and 2-0 in Middle Border Conference play.
Girls Basketball
Prescott has settled into the middle of the Middle Border standings at 2-2, going 1-1 in conference games this week. The Cardinals lost 57-50 against St. Croix Central on Dec. 10 and snuck out a 46-43 win against Altoona on Friday.
Ellsworth joined Prescott at 1-1 on the week, losing 43-31 to Amery on Dec. 10 and toppling New Richmond 55-47. The Panthers are 2-0 against teams from the always challenging Big Rivers Conference. In their own conference though, they sit at 0-3.
The Wildcats got their first win of the year, tackling conference foe Chippewa Falls 56-36 Friday. Abigail Treichel, Kaelin Jalowitz and Addy Timm all had strong nights to move to 1-6 on the year and 1-1 in conference.
Spring Valley took a couple of tough losses on the week, losing 76-44 to Colfax on Dec. 10 and 69-38 to Mondovi on Friday. The conference losses hurt the Cardinals who now sit at 2-5 overall and 1-2 in conference.
EPC is still looking for a first win at 0-6, losing 70-14 to Durand-Arkansaw on Dec. 10 and 41-29 to Boyceville on Friday.
Wrestling
River Falls boys competed against Chippewa Falls and New Richmond on Thursday, finishing in a 35-35 tie against Chippewa Falls and a 44-31 loss to New Richmond. The Wildcats then went to the Dual in the Dells over the weekend, beating Waukesha West and SPASH and losing to Coleman, Muskego and DC Everest to end in 12th of 32 teams.
Ellsworth competed against Amery and Somerset on Thursday night, beating Amery 54-30 and beating Somerset 50-30 after starting down 30-0.
Spring Valley/Elmwood took sixth of 18 teams in Tomah over the weekend; Jack Steinmeyer and Austin Krentz each placed second in their brackets.
Hockey
The St. Croix Valley Fusion went 1-1 on the week, winning Dec. 10 against Western Wisconsin 3-2 and losing 6-2 to Central Wisconsin on Saturday. The win came in a conference matchup while the loss did not, so the Wildcats are now 1-0 in Big Rivers play.
The River Falls boys picked up a 5-2 win over St. Paul Academy on Saturday, with a pair of the goals coming from Jaxon Flanagan.
Boys Swimming and Diving
River Falls won its first conference dual of the year against Rice Lake on Thursday 82-71. Finn Jensen won the 200 and 500 Freestyle, Jacob Weiss won the 200 IM and 100 Backstroke, Daniel Carns won the 50 and 100 Freestyle, Andrew Hoffman won the 100 Butterfly, Joe Hoffman won the 100 Breastroke and the team won both Freestyle relays.
Next up is another home matchup, this time facing Chippewa Falls on Thursday.
Gymnastics
It was a busy week for the River Falls gymnastics team, taking on a triple dual meet against Rice Lake and Menomonie on Thursday before the Chippewa Falls Snowflake Invite on Saturday.
The Wildcats took second at the triple dual, with Ruby Amundson placing second all-around and the team took second again at the Invite, with Amundson winning the all-around title with a 36.125 score.
Top-three event finishers at the Invite included Tirfe L’Allier in third on vault, Amundson in second on bars and first on floor and Bella Franklin taking third on floor.
