RIVER FALLS – The River Falls Police and Fire Commission has named longtime firefighter Matt Cernohous as its acting fire chief.

Cernohous has stepped into the role of Acting Fire Chief for the River Falls Fire Department following the retirement of Chief Steven Cash, who had served since 2022. Recruitment is underway to hire a full-time fire chief.

“We are thankful for Matt’s leadership during this time of transition as we search for a permanent fire chief,” said City Administrator Scot Simpson. “Matt has been a dedicated firefighter with the City of River Falls for over two decades, and we believe he is well-suited to take on the additional responsibilities that come with serving as the acting fire chief.”

Cernohous joined the River Falls Fire Department in September 2000 and most recently served as Division Chief of Operations. His deep knowledge of the department and years of service position him well to lead during this interim period.

“I am honored to have the opportunity to lead the River Falls Fire Department as its acting fire chief,” Cernohous said. “Being a firefighter has been a big part of my life for nearly 25 years, and I look forward to serving in this role as we search for the next full-time leader of the department.”

The River Falls Fire Department is comprised exclusively of volunteer firefighters, with the fire chief serving as the only full-time city employee. The department currently has 52 volunteer firefighters.”
