RIVER FALLS — River Falls tennis is taking steps forward as the year goes on, picking up some solid match wins as well as grinded out individual wins.
“I’ve seen really good development and growth so far,” Head Coach Lisa Dick said. “We’re a pretty young team and I’m a first-year coach, so this year for us is all about growth and being a good person and good sportsmanship.”
The team has gotten wins over Tomah, Holmen twice and Milton on the year. Even in some of the losses, they are getting individual match wins.
“Skills are improving, and also the girls [are] believing in themselves,” Dick said. “Their mental state of mind, they’re gaining confidence.”
On Sept. 17, the Wildcats celebrated Senior Night. They honored seniors Anya Caliva and Macie Oian, two players who have been on the team since ninth grade.
“They are for sure the leaders of the team with by far the most experience, and they’re really capable both from a playing perspective and from a leadership perspective,” Dick said.
She added the two are great role models for the underclassmen to look up to.
The recent referendum brought new courts to River Falls, so they have a fresh start in terms of facilities as well. Dick is excited to continue to get more students to join the tennis team in the years to come.
As for this season, it is all about using each match as an opportunity to learn, adapt and improve.
“I am looking forward to more of the same,” Dick said. “Continued growth and confidence.”
The final two matches for the Wildcats in the regular season are at home against Hudson on Sept. 25 and at home against Baldwin-Woodville on Oct. 2. Subsectionals begin the following week to get the postseason chugging along.
