Youth Government Day draws area students to Ellsworth

Posted

The 61st annual Pierce County Youth Government Day, sponsored by the Pierce County Council of the American Legion and Auxiliary took place Wednesday, April 26 at the Pierce County Courthouse.

Forty-two middle school and high school students from the six school districts in the county participated in the engaging and interactive day. The day began promptly at 9 a.m. in the courtroom where the elected officials were introduced and Judge Rohl had a very engaging and interactive session with the students. She was assisted by District Attorney Halle Hatch and Investigator Koch from the Sheriff’s Department.

The students then had the opportunity to visit offices in the courthouse to learn what services are provided for county residents. After lunch the group went to the Law Enforcement Center where Sheriff Chad Koranda and his team also had an engaging and interactive session with the students as they viewed equipment used by the department and had the opportunity to see some areas of the building. Visit the Sheriff’s Facebook page to see pictures from the event at the Law Enforcement Center.  This truly was an awesome day for the students and adults who participated.

Pierce County Youth Government Day began in 1960 when Gertrude Helmer and Dorothy Oftedahl and Women of the American Legion Auxiliary decided students need to learn how county government plays an important role in their lives. Pierce County Youth Government Day has been held annually except during 2020-2022 when the pandemic temporarily halted the event.
