Writing in the opinion pages, editor Doug Schulz says that parenthood is like climbing a mountain, where by looking back one barely remembered where they had started but still had a long way to go. It was worth it in the end, though, as the moments of busyness and endlessly answering of questions were matched by the words, “I love you Dad.”
Sounding off in the forum section, meanwhile, local residents shared their thoughts on New Year’s resolutions. Some hadn’t made them yet, while for others it was a matter of not making them, in order not to break them.

80 years ago THE HASTINGS GAZETTE January 29, 1943 Farm and Machinery schools postponed due to temperatures some 25 degrees below zero, making it hard to start machinery.
Edward McLaughlin is reported missing in the line of duty from the U.S. Navy.
Buried with military honors after dying in a training flight at Orlando, Florida was Lieutenant James Jensen. Services were held at 2:00 p.m. from St. Luke’s Episcopal, with public tribute was made prior to this at the Hastings Armory, followed with burial in Lakeside Cemetery.
The Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps takes jobs of trained men “in increasing numbers.”
Speaking to the Kiwanis club on the need for soil conservation was Washington County farmer William A. Bennett, who spoke at the Gardner hotel in Hastings.
Making note that decisions made in the present could determine if future Minnesotans or their descendants had enough to eat when 1,000 years had passed, Bennett showed soil maps of Washington County, with the Kiwanis club members asking a number of questions on the topic.

In case the Mayor shall be guilty of any willful oppression or corrupt partiality in the discharge of the duties of his office, he shall be liable to indictment, and on conviction thereof shall pay a fine or not more than five hundred dollars, and the Court shall have power (upon the recommendation of the Jury in the cause) to add to the judgement for the fine that he be removed from office.
Section 5. In case the Mayor shall be absent from any meeting of the City Council, they shall proceed to elect, of their own number a temporary presiding officer, who for the time being shall discharge all the duties of the Mayor. In case of the absence of the Mayor from the city, or his inability
