A reminder from Among Friends: Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month

Posted

RIVER FALLS – Among Friends Dementia Social Respite Program wants to remind everyone that November is National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month. A better understanding of the disease can improve the quality of life for both those living with Alzheimer’s and their caregivers. And if you need help, Among Friends may be able to provide it.

Early diagnosis is important because it makes planning for the future and managing health concerns easier. There is no cure for Alzheimer’s at this time but diagnosing it early allows for beneficial treatment and interventions. If you have a loved one who struggles with memory, communication, or planning, or exhibits symptoms such as marked changes in behavior or impaired judgment, talk with a health care provider.

Research shows that socializing, cognitive engagement, activity, good nutrition, and overall well-being can make a positive difference in the symptoms and progression of the disease. The trained staff and volunteers at the Among Friends program offer participants a range of activities--including games, music, chair yoga, and craft and carpentry projects—as well as opportunities to socialize with others. We also serve a nutritious lunch.

The best time for those living with Alzheimer’s disease to begin participating in the Among Friends program is early on, when the connection and activity we offer can have the greatest benefits. Another benefit, of course, is the respite the program gives to family members who provide care for their loved ones living with dementia.

Among Friends is located in River Falls and is open on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Visit the website at www.amongfriendsrf.com for more information, or contact the program by sending an email to amongfriendsrf@gmail.com or calling 715-293-2561.
