For 15 years, the American Association of University Women-River Falls has been holding an essay contest for eighth grade students in River Falls. Students are asked to do research on a woman in a STEM field and then write an essay about the woman of their choice – either from history or alive now. Essays are judged by a panel of teachers using stated criteria. Students are awarded a certificate and $50.00. Usually the awards are given out at an AAUW meeting with students, parents and teachers invited to attend. This year the meeting was virtual and students joined on zoom to receive recognition and listen to Dr. Holly Dolliver, Professor of Geology at UWRF, talk about her STEM journey. The students pictured, all from Meyer Middle School, are Addie Smith, daughter of Brian and Sarah Smith; Nora Nygaard, daughter of Nate and Tanya Nygaard; Dylan Paulson, daughter of Mark and Carey Paulson; and Sydney Cegielski, daughter of Amy Simmer and Kyle Cegielski.
