A potential new alpine ski club for the Prescott area is looking for some student athletes interested in helping to bring a new sport to the Prescott School District, and possibly win a high school letter for themselves in the sport, though strictly as an earned bonus.
“All the ski hills have race teams,” said Welch Village ski coach David Francis when reached for comment by phone, adding that his kids race and that he knew of several students in the area interested in racing. For those interested in potentially joining and/or volunteering for the new alpine ski racing club, an informational meeting was held this past Monday, February 3rd at 6 pm at the Prescott High School to discuss costs, training, and last but not least, racing! Wisconsin ski race options include “Slalom, G-F, and Super G,” whereas Minnesota has Slalom. In Minnesota ski team members would compete in open invitationals, though not league racing. Francis said that if enough interest is shown in the potential new sport, the group would then approach the Prescott School Board for its approval. If approval is granted by the school board, the new alpine ski race team could also include Ellsworth students as part of a cooperative.
The sport would be open to those in Grades 7 through 12, and all training for the upcoming 2020 season will be at Welch Village from December through February, with a “come out and try it” day at Welch Village later this year. Students would have to purchase a lift ticket for the day, but would otherwise have courses already set up to decide if they were interested in getting further involved in the sport.
If everything works out to start the new alpine ski club, members would be entered in two races this coming winter, as a means of getting the sport started. Those who were unable to attend the informational meeting this upcoming February 3rd but who would like more information can contact David Francis at 612799-8935 or by email at [email protected] Feel the speed, feel the rush—call for more information on the Alpine Ski Club today!
