Boys Basketball

With the Tuesday slate of games being entirely cleared due to weather, it made for a light week of both boys and girls basketball.

Spring Valley won its lone game in a low-scoring conference bout 42-23 over Chetek-Weyerhaeuser. The Cardinals are 1-2, but 1-0 in the Dunn-St. Croix Conference.

Prescott got its revenge against an Amery team that knocked the Cardinals out in the Regional Final at the Nest a season ago. The Cardinals are a perfect 4-0 during the young year.

Ellsworth went on the road to face Saint Croix Central for a Middle Border test, coming up just short 65-63. The Panthers are now 1-1 thus far. Prescott heads to Ellsworth on Dec. 18 for a crucial rivalry game.

River Falls also played just its second game, winning 80-56 over Chippewa Falls to improve to 1-1. Senior Brody Graetz led the team with 25 points.

After losing 61-33 to a strong Durand-Arkansaw program, Elmwood/Plum City got its first win, beating Birchwood 75-37.

Girls Basketball

Prescott won the rivalry matchup against Ellsworth 69-59. After falling to a 44-23 halftime deficit, Ellsworth threw a counterpunch to get back into the game. In the end, it was too late to fully pull it off. The Panthers also dropped a close one Dec. 8, losing 50-48 against Durand-Arkansaw. Prescott is 2-3 on the year and 1-2 in conference, while Ellsworth is 2-5 with an equal 1-2 conference record.

EPC has now won three of four, each in convincing fashion. The Wolves beat Birchwood 58-15 over the weekend after losing to Durand-Arkansaw 59-31. EPC is 3-3 this season with a 1-2 conference record. Spring Valley took it to Chetek-Weyerhaeuser 55-25 in the team’s conference opener to move to 2-2 overall.

River Falls absolutely floated to a 2-0 record on the week, beating Somerset 78-46 and Chippewa Falls 74-44. Senior Hayley Quinn scored 29 against Somerset to steal the show. The Wildcats are 6-1 overall and 2-0 in conference.

Wrestling

Spring Valley/Elmwood was at a weekend tournament in Tomah, highlighted by a first-place finish for Tyler Vanasse (285), a second-place finish for Austin Krentz (138) and a third-place finish for Sam Schmitt (144). They placed fourth of 23 teams.

River Falls won a dual 51-24 over Chippewa Falls. The boys and girls both battled at the Duel in the Dells through some tough matches over the weekend. The team returns to the mat for a Dec. 18 quad in Eau Claire against Eau Claire Memorial, Menomonie and Rice Lake.

The Prescott girls took the mat at Eau Claire North. According to a social media post from the team, freshman Alexa Droher suffered head/neck trauma that led to a stay in the ICU. Her condition had slowly moved in a positive direction as of Dec. 13, with hopes that she could return home Dec. 14.

Hockey

Coming out of a multi-week break, the St. Croix Valley Fusion won 6-0 over Hastings. It was clear there was no rust built up, moving to 3-1 on the year.

The River Falls boys team lost its lone game 3-2 against Eau Claire Memorial. The Wildcats are 3-2 overall and 1-2 in Big Rivers Conference play on the year.

Gymnastics

River Falls got a win in Rice Lake, scoring a new season high of 136.775. The team is now on a break until Jan. 10, picking things up with a home meet.

Boys Swim and Dive

River Falls lost 112-60 in a Big Rivers Conference matchup against Rice Lake. Next up is a matchup at Chippewa Falls on Dec. 18 before heading to Eau Claire North for a tournament Dec. 20.
