Wrestling
In the inaugural Big Rivers Conference Championships, Olivia Luther and Providence Kretzmann became River Falls girls wrestling’s first conference champions. The boys also had a big week that featured a 3-0 quad with wins over Eau Claire, Rice Lake and Menomonie.
Ellsworth swept a quad of its own, beating Amery 70-11, Somerset 66-15 and Mahtomedi 57-22.
Spring Valley/Elmwood split home duals with a 44-30 win over Boyceville and a 50-27 loss to Glenwood City.
Prescott split the Hudson triangular, beating Rice Lake 51-27 and losing to Hudson 64-14. The Cardinals had a nice weekend getting a win from Bryce Feran, second place finishes from Shia Parmeter and Gunnar Doyle, and third place finishes from Alina Bauman, Addy Allsop and Adyn Allsop.
Girls basketball
After losing to a Rice Lake team that boasts a top 50 recruit in the nation 80-61, Prescott bounced back with a 41-36 win at Ellsworth. Against Rice Lake, senior Violet Otto recorded 40 points and 11 rebounds. Prescott is 10-7 overall and 6-3 in the Middle Border and Ellsworth is 5-13 overall and 1-9 in the Middle Border. Ellsworth put on a scoring clinic earlier in the week, beating Luck 91-33.
River Falls split a pair of games against teams of different levels. Eau Claire Memorial has been tearing through its schedule this season and did not stop in River Falls with a 71-38 win over the Wildcats. The Wildcats swiftly bounced back, beating Chippewa Falls 51-31 on the road with 20 points from senior Hayley Quinn. River Falls is 10-8 on the year with a 4-5 conference record.
Spring Valley had a busy week after a string of postponements, losing to Clear Lake 65-59, beating Chetek-Weyerhaeuser 44-40 and losing to Boyceville 45-32. The Cardinals are 9-8 overall and 5-5 in conference play.
Elmwood/Plum City took on two of the top three teams in the Dunn-St. Croix Conference, losing 60-27 against Durand-Arkansaw and 48-26 against Colfax. The Wolves are 7-12 on the year with a 2-9 conference record.
Boys basketball
River Falls split games on back-to-back nights, beating Chippewa Falls 64-48 and losing to Mahtomedi. The Wildcats are 11-5 and 7-1 in Big Rivers play, good for tie with Hudson for the top spot.
Ellsworth’s three-game week resulted in a 60-57 win over conference-contending Osceola, a 69-54 loss to conference-leading St. Croix Central and a weekend win 88-51 over Grantsburg. The Panthers are 8-8 overall and 3-5 in conference.
Prescott also lost to St. Croix Central, 66-59, also losing 66-43 to Holmen before bouncing back to win 56-47 over Amery to close the week. The Cardinals are 11-6 overall and 5-3 in conference.
EPC had a three-loss week, dropping games 65-53 to Chetek-Weyerhaeuser, 87-68 to Colfax and 83-57 to Clear Lake. The Wolves are 4-11 overall and 2-7 in Dunn-St. Croix play.
Spring Valley has undergone a rough patch, losing eight consecutive games including losses to Eau Claire Immanuel Lutheran, Mondovi and Clear Lake on the week. The Cardinals are 3-11 overall and 1-6 in conference.
Hockey
The St. Croix Valley Fusion have won seven games in a row, beating Hayward 2-0, Hudson 5-3 and Superior 3-1 on the week. With the wins, the Fusion are leading the Big Rivers Conference with a 5-1 record and hold a 16-4 overall record.
The River Falls boys had a tough week against non-conference opponents, losing 8-1 to Muskego and 7-4 to Kenosha. The Wildcats are 12-8 overall and 7-3 in conference, second in the league following only 10-0 Hudson.
Gymnastics
River Falls posted a new season high score of 138.725 to win the La Crosse Invite. Rubie Amundson set a school record on the bars with a 9.650.
Boys Swim and Dive
The swim and dive season is entering its final stretch, with River Falls heading to the Big Rivers Conference event Feb. 6-7 in Menomonie and Sectionals in Rice Lake the following week.
