River Falls had a 1-1 week to open the year against a pair of Middle Border Conference opponents. The games went very differently, with the Wildcats beating Osceola 13-2 and losing to Baldwin-Woodville 12-0.
Elmwood/Plum City had some major scoring nights but fell short 12-11 against Cochrane-Fountain City and 11-9 against Clear Lake. Ellsworth’s lone game ended in a 14-4 loss to Hudson in five innings.
Prescott did not take the field on the week but is slated for five games between April 6-11. Spring Valley also did not take to the diamond quite yet, but has a big three-game week slated to open the year.
Baseball
The story of the week was game cancellations for all sports, but one baseball game was played when it was all said and done. Spring Valley hosted the Somerset Spartans on March 31. Somerset scored a run in the first, third and fourth innings; however, limiting the damage to a single run each allowed Spring Valley to tie the game 3-3 in the sixth with junior Braden Gregg driving in a pair and a third scoring on a dropped third strike. Somerset got the last laugh, though, posting a five-run seventh inning to win 8-3.
Track and Field
Given that the track and field season opens with indoor events, the sport was the one not affected by the cancellations.
EPC competed at UW-Stout twice to open the season, with Allie Sauve winning the triple jump crown both times and Brewer Link taking second in the high jump the first meet. The second time around, the Wolves had 10 personal best times.
Also at UW-Stout, Prescott’s Andrew Russell earned a meet record in the 200-meter, with Wyatt Budworth taking third in the event. A relay squad made up of Russell, Budworth, Liam Haeg and Jaylen Fleming took third place. Already this season, Russell broke the school record 50-meter time with a 6.47 and Micah Overland broke the school record 55-meter hurdles with an 8.77 and then again with an 8.60.
River Falls has already slotted into six events as a team, three of which took place at UWRF. Most recently, the Wildcats competed at UWRF on April 4 at the Midwest Indoor Championships, taking sixth of 16 as a team in the boys competition and ninth of 16 in the girls competition.
Girls Soccer
River Falls’ opening night against Eau Claire North was cancelled due to some wild weather, but a new week means another chance to take the field. The Wildcats are set up for an April 7 road matchup with Hudson, an April 10 home matchup with Onalaska and an April 11 home battle against Holmen.
Boys Golf
Weather permitting, this week marks the opening weeks for both boys golf and tennis. Ellsworth and Prescott have an opening conference event slated for April 7 in Hammond. River Falls is set to begin action in Hudson April 8 and Spring Valley steps into action April 9 for a conference meet at Colfax.
Boys Tennis
River Falls and Ellsworth get into action this week, with River Falls hosting Osceola on April 7 and Eau Claire North on April 9. The following week, River Falls takes on Chippewa Falls on April 14 and will be competing in a quad at La Crosse on April 18.
Ellsworth’s season starts with a two-day invitational at Altoona on April 10 and 11. The following week, Ellsworth hosts Lake City on April 13 and heads to Osceola on April 14 before capping the week with an April 18 invitational at Eau Claire North.
