Ask Andrew: Dealing with the paradox of summer relaxation

All year long it feels like the great people of Wisconsin are counting down the days until summer. The hot weather, getting out on the water and the many summer festivals and events make the season worth the wait.

Yet, when summer does roll around, it is never that relaxing three months we promised ourselves it would be. Everyone overloads their schedules and finds a dozen new things to be stressed out about. After spending nine months telling ourselves we were going to clear our calendars for the summer and have a good time, reality sets in once again. It may not be true for everyone, but it seems that everyone I ask to hang out with this summer says they have a lot going on. I am no different, finding myself turning down their plans in favor of something that I did not picture taking up my summer.

Lucky for us it is not too late. We need to agree as a team to carve out time for ourselves here and there. We need to spend time having a good time, and we also need to spend time relaxing. Those are two important things in life, and if you do not take the time to enjoy them, summer is going to pass you by in a hurry.

Even if you do not have much time on your hands, focus on doing the things that make you happy. For me, I love to get into the water whenever I can. Whether it be swimming in a lake, river, pool or at a waterpark, I vow to go out and have some fun. I also enjoy getting out to some summer baseball games, which should be no problem given it is part of my job.

My third and final goal is to get some basketball games in at the park. I play plenty of indoor basketball during the winter, but nothing is the same as bouncing the ball on some uneven pavement under the boiling sun. Recently, I have put a big focus on both my physical and mental health, which is part of the reason why doing the things I love over these next few months will be so important.

When fall comes around we can all go back to being stressed out seven days a week and we can make up for the months of errands we put off during the summer. For now, it is time to go out and live the dream.
