Ask Andrew: What happened to winter hobbies

When you become an adult, the winter activities that once made the season magical start to fade away. Sure, things like snowmobiling and skiing are great, but the days of playing in snow hills and sledding down steep slopes are lifetime memories for many that are just not there anymore.

I assume when you have kids of your own, you get to relive these memories all over again. Until then, I am here to share some ideas of things to do that do not require much equipment, athletic ability or industry knowledge.

Bake Off

Now, now, save me your, ‘I suck at baking.’ I don’t want to hear it. Baking is hard, and I am also bad at it. A bake-off is not about eating the best food ever. Have one person be the judge, pick a bunch of basic ingredients as well as some cool holiday ones like peppermint, gingerbread, etc.

Lay out all the ingredients and give people an hour to see what concoctions they can pull together.

There are no excuses to stay out of this one. I do not care if you have never cooked a meal in your entire life, you are in.

Even better, if there are a lot of people at the function, pair people up into teams. Draw the teams at random and see how people work together to make a perfect symphony.

Enjoying the outdoors

Yes, it’s cold outside in the winter. Sometimes you just have to suffer through it on the days when it is in the 20s and 30s to take it all in. A reason for a nationwide decrease in mood during the winter is because of the lack of enjoying the sun and outdoors.

When you get some okay weather, put on a coat and a hat and go for a walk. Even just sitting on the porch gets the job done. In my opinion, winter is the most beautiful season. With the trees thinner you can truly see every crevice of what is happening in the woods.

A timeless classic

It may sound silly, but a good ol’ snowball fight will never disappoint. The beauty of a snowball fight is that you can do it anywhere, at any time, with anyone and it will be fun every single time. Stop letting the kids be the only ones to have fun.

Even better is the all winter long snowball fight. It does not matter who starts the war, but every time you see them from then on, make sure to get them with one in the back.

The point of this column is not the ideas. The ideas I presented are all just silly things I thought would be fun. The point is to stop the notion that there is a quarter of the year where there are no activities for adults.
