ELLSWORTH– The Ellsworth Senior Center and Ellsworth Public Library invite the community to a special Discover Together Tuesday event at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 8, featuring author Judie Ohm and her book “Turret Tales.”
“Turret Tales” chronicles the extraordinary life of Doug Ward, a Mondovi native and WWII Army Air Corpsman. In 1942, Doug volunteered for service and trained as a mechanic. Determined to stay with his unit as they deployed to Europe, he courageously took on the role of a Ball Turret Gunner aboard a B-17 bomber. During his service, Doug completed 37 missions with both the 301st Bomb Group, 15th Air Force in Italy and the 305th Bomb Group, 8th Air Force in England.
The book features over 400 personal photographs, capturing Doug’s journey from his youth to his wartime experiences, and later years at the Log Cabin Airport. It also includes a touching tribute to his childhood friend, Chris Hanseman, a fellow Mondovi native and the youngest WWII flying Ace, who was tragically killed while piloting a P-51.
Following the program, attendees are invited to stay for a complimentary luncheon, generously provided by the Ellsworth Senior Center and the Friends of the Ellsworth Public Library.
Discover Together Tuesday is a monthly event held on the second Tuesday of each month at the Ellsworth Senior Center’s new location inside English Lutheran Church, located at 229 W. Main St., Ellsworth. Each month features a new and engaging program, and everyone is welcome to attend.
