ELLSWORTH — The crowd was packed at Bob Young Field, with both the Ellsworth Hubbers and Bay City Bombers faithful filling up the hill side on Cheese Curd Fest Saturday for some league play action.
The Bombers proved to be the curd burglars, led by a complete game shutout on the mound from Logan Vogel and home runs from third baseman Anthony Madsen and first baseman Chase Snyder, to take the win 8-0.
“That was a big bounce back game for Vogel… that was a huge statement,” Madsen said. “Our record isn’t as good as we perceive as a team. We’ve been a little bit droughty, but we’ve been in every single game… It just was good to get over that hump.”
Ellsworth’s Tom Kroohn and Bay City’s Vogel were going punch for punch in the early innings. Bay City had a few hits in the early innings, but Kroohn was picking up strikeouts to escape any damage.
Snyder reaching base in the top of the fourth on an overthrow was the first breakthrough of the game. He swiped second with two outs, and shortstop Max Langer lined a base hit to left to score him.
With first and third and two outs in the top of the fifth came the back breaker, as Madsen clobbered a home run over the high wall in left field, extending the lead to 4-0. Madsen picked up a base hit that snuck by the third baseman. Snyder followed it up with a lasered home run of his own, 6-0.
“Just trying to hunt my pitch and try to see it in deep. Try to be fluid,” Madsen said. “That was huge for Chase, also. He’s been trying to hunt one of those for a long, long time, especially off that pitcher. That was great to see. Just a great day at the ballpark.”
“We were struggling a little bit at first, but bats got hot. We strung a lot of hits together,” Snyder said. “[Madsen’s] home run right before me was huge, and we just kept rolling off of it.”
The final two runs came in the top of the ninth when Langer hit a bases-loaded ground ball to third, and a tough hop on the throw to first to bring in a pair.
On the other side of the ball, Vogel was dealing, and the defense was backing him up all night.
“Defense made good plays, and then just throwing strikes,” Vogel said. “Do what we did today. Play good defense, hit the ball hard, move people around.”
Snyder said the outfield was great all night, and Langer made some key plays to preserve the clean sheet. Vogel held the Hubbers to five hits.
The Bay City road crowd showed out. Having a fan base in an away game that was as rowdy as many teams’ home crowd was felt on the field.
“Bay City definitely has the best fans in the league right here. We have a huge following, and they all support us win or lose,” Snyder said.
