Busy week for Prescott ends with win over Ellsworth

The Prescott Girls Varsity Basketball team welcomed Amery to Prescott High School on Tuesday for game one of a double header between Prescott and Amery. The boy’s game would follow the girls. Prescott entered the game with an 8-2 overall record and a 5-0 conference record. Prescott had a one game lead in the conference over New Richmond and Baldwin-Woodville. Those teams would play each other on Tuesday night. Amery had a record of 2-4 overall and 2-4 in the Middle Border Conference.

Prescott started out the game on fire. Tori Benck made backto- back three-point shots, Bella Lenz hit a three the next time down the court and then found Benck for a layup. Prescott took a quick 14-0 lead. Amery called a timeout. With 11:39 left in the first half, Amery would get their first point from the free throw line. Prescott would lead 21-1. Prescott’s onslaught would continue. Brynley Goehring entered the game quickly scored five points. Amery struggled to break Prescott’s trap, and could not get anything to drop on their end. The Cardinals kept shooting over the 2-3 zone from Amery, when they were not creating turnovers. Prescott called a timeout leading 31-1, with 9:34 left first half. Amery made a three-point basket, their first basket from the field, after over ten minutes of playing time. Katrina Budworth came off the bench to hit a three of her own, and Prescott lead 45-4 with 6:15 left first half. Prescott coasted to a 55-8 halftime lead.

Lenz stole the ball and scored on a layup for the first points of the second half giving Prescott the 57-8 lead. When Goehring hit her third three-point basket of the game, Prescott lead 68-10 with 10:34 remaining in the game. With Prescott leading 70-10, running time started with 9:00 remaining in the game. With the massive lead, coach Radloff was able to give several of his bench players lots of playing time while resting his starters most of the second half. Prescott was just far too athletic and talented for Amery tonight as the Cardinals win easily 72-15.

Benck led the team in scoring with 21 points on an amazing 8-9 from the field. Tori added 10 rebounds and five assists.

“It was nice to see Tori have a great game. She always gives 100% defensively and her having a career night for herself offensively is well deserved,” said Coach Rob Radloff.

Lenz scored 17 points and had a team high six assists, Goerhing added 11 points, Nicole Dalman scored nine points and a team high 12 rebounds, Budworth had six points, Erin Boatman had two points and six rebounds, Lila Posthuma added two points and five rebounds, Isabel Matzek and Rhianna Stutz had two points each, Sydney Matzek added five rebounds.

The team returned to action Thursday night as they hosted Baldwin-Woodville at the nest, the fourth of five straight home games for the Cardinals. Prescott entered the game with a 9-2 overall record and a perfect 6-0 conference record. Baldwin-Woodville had an overall record of 5-3 and a 4-2 record in the Middle Border Conference.

The Blackhawks would not back down though and would outscore the Cardinals 34-31 in the second half as Prescott would win by seven, 63-56. Prescott won the game with good defense and excellent shooting. The girls shot 27-51, 53%, from the field.

The Prescott offense ran through Lenz as she would again lead the team in points and assists. Lenz scored 27 on 10-15 shooting and tallied nine assists. Dalman scored 12 points with a team high six rebounds and a team high tying five steals. Posthuma scored eight points, Benck added six points and five steals, Goerhing scored six points, Sydney Matzek and Boatman scored two points each.

On Friday night the girls would play their third game in four nights as they hosted Ellsworth. The Panthers came into the game with a 6-4 record and a 4-3 record in the Middle Border Conference.

Prescott’s defense was again excellent to start the game. They forced turnovers on Ellsworth’s first three possessions. Dalman, Benck, and Posthuma all made shots and three minutes into the game it was 7-0 Prescott. A three-point play by Benck gave Prescott their first double digit lead of the game at 18-7 a little more than five minutes into the first half. The Panthers then made a 7-2 run and force a Prescott timeout with 9:19 left first half and the score 20-14 Cardinals. After the timeout, Ellsworth would close to 20-18 and would hang around most of the rest of the first half. Prescott closed out the half on a 9-1 over the final 1:54, capped off by a Lenz three-point basketball right before the horn. Prescott was up 42-29 at the half.

The Cardinal depth started to really show up after baskets by Boatman and Goehring, Prescott led 53-37. This was the second game in the last three where Goehring would score double digits off of the bench.

Coach Radloff said, “Brynley gives us freshness off the bench. She is a hustler and having her come in a score can really give us a lift.”

Prescott won the game 93-49 to sweep Ellsworth this season.

Lenz had another huge night all around to pace Prescott. Bella led the way with 34 points nine assists and six steals. Benck added 15 points and six steals, Dalman 11 points and eight rebounds, Goehring 11 points and four steals, Boatman scored six points with five rebounds and five assists, Posthuma chipped in with five points, Budworth added three points, Sydney Matzek, Isabel Matzek, Stutz, and Liz Rohl had two point a piece.

Prescott improves to 11-2 overall and stays prefect in the Middle Border Conference as they improve to 8-0 in conference play. Prescott’s next game is Tuesday January 19th when they travel to New Richmond to face the second place Tigers. Coach
