The City of Prescott Common Council unanimously approved some measures necessary to apply for COVID-19 Community Development Block Grant Funding to purchase the building that houses the Prescott Food Pantry.

Plans are for expansion of the food pantry and opening of a senior center where lunch will be served in the building that once housed the River Heights Motel Pool.

A public hearing for the proposed application for the grant will be held Feb. 22 at the city council meeting at 6 p.m. where the project will be explained and the community need highlighted.

“Residents of the City of Prescott are encouraged to attend, especially residents with low to moderate incomes,” a notice for the hearing that was published in the Feb. 11 edition of The Journal states.

To clear the way to apply for the grant, the council unanimously approved a resolution setting up a Citizen Participation Plan and a committee to oversee that plan, which will be appointed by the mayor and confirmed by the city council.

The council also approved a resolution to apply for the grant for “Food Pantry Expansion/ Senior Center Kitchen/COVID-19 Testing Location.”

Prescott Food Pantry Director Pete French was on hand at the Zoom meeting to talk about the growing needs in the community for the food pantry.

The council last month agreed to spending $6,500 to put together the grant application for the purchase of the building at 911 Pearl Street.

The building is currently for sale for $349,000. It is owned by P.M. Investments, Mike Hiniker.

Under the plan, the city would own the building and lease it back to the Prescott Food Pantry. After five years, the food pantry could buy the building from the city.

The senior center is located at Malone Intermediate School, which housed the Prescott Senior Gathering Place. Seniors haven’t been able to meet there during the pandemic, however. The commercial kitchen would allow for hot meals to be available for seniors seven days a week.
