Can you believe it’s possible to drive a vehicle for $0.04 a mile? If I told you this, you would be asking me which gas station is selling gas this cheap. I’ll even make this deal better. You don’t have to leave home to fill up. Too good to be true? This is the reality of electric vehicles. A Chevrolet Bolt, all electric vehicle, uses about .29 kWh per mile. At $0.12/kWh this puts your fuel cost per mile at less than $0.04. For most of us, our errands, commutes to work, or even activities on the weekend can be done using an electric vehicle. Fuel prices today are incredibly low, but an electric vehicle still beats the cost to drive per mile. A charging unit can be installed at you home to allow you to recharge (fillup) your vehicle. Depending on your electric provider, different rates and conditions may apply, so check with them before hand to see what they offer.
Worldwide auto manufacturers are heavily investing in electric vehicles, including SUVs and trucks. It won’t be long before you see more and more options available to consumers. In the United States in 2019, about 245,000 electric vehicles were sold. Once considered an expensive vehicle, car manufacturers are delivering models that rival in comparison to gasoline or diesel-powered engines. In fact, the electric vehicle market is expected to reach 30 million vehicles by 2030 and will account for 57% of all new vehicle sales. For most, commuting or daily errands is the primary use of vehicles. An electric vehicle is a perfect choice. The range of a Chevy Bolt is 250 miles, Tesla vehicles provide over 300 miles and these ranges will only increase.
Many people are still skeptical about electric vehicles. One of the main reasons is called “range anxiety” which is the fear that the electric vehicle will not have a sufficient charge to complete your journey. Range anxiety can be reduced through education and driving sensibly. Electric vehicles quickly accelerate, which is a very positive feature; however, fast acceleration uses additional kWh’s, reducing the range of the battery. Air conditioning and heating can decrease the range by as much as 30%. When traveling, there are downloadable apps that show the locations of charging stations across the country. Level 3 charging stations are located along major travel routes and will charge vehicles at the rate of 100 miles per half hour of charge allowing for breaks. Many hotels and accommodations now have Level 2 charging stations for overnight charging. For most people, unless you take a lot of road trips, most of your day-to-day driving can be done very easily on a single charge, then be charged overnight and ready for the next day.
If you haven’t driven an electric vehicle, take one out for a test drive. You will find they are fun to drive, have plenty of horsepower, and most importantly will save you money.
