Step back in time and explore the rich visual history of Ellsworth through the lens of one of its most enduring photographers. "Captured in Time: The Legacy of Lawrence Studio" is now on display at the Ellsworth Public Library, showcasing the remarkable work of Haakon W. Lawrence, who operated the Lawrence Studio in Ellsworth, Pierce County, Wisconsin, from around 1904 to 1950. His daughter, Hilma Lawrence, joined the business in 1936 and continued running the studio until 1977.
This evocative exhibit showcases a curated collection of local portraits and community landscapes, offering a rare glimpse into the lives, faces, and places that shaped our town during the early 20th century. From family gatherings to rural scenes, Lawrence’s photographs capture more than just images—they preserve the spirit of a growing community.
With the generous support of the Pierce County Historical Association, the library's local history display in the "Vault" has expanded beyond its walls and now continues along our art rails. The result is a stunning tribute to Ellsworth’s heritage, a visual narrative of generations past.
Whether you’re a lifelong resident, local historian, or curious visitor, this exhibit invites you to connect with Ellsworth’s story—one photo at a time.
On Display: Now through late October, 2025
Free and open to the public
