Prescott has 2 game edge, earns 2 seed in WIAA Regionals

The Cardianls girls basketball team stands atop the Middle Border Conference and are guaranted at least a share of the league title.

After losing a non-conference game to undefeated Saint Croix Falls last Monday, the Cardinals responded with two wins over Middle Border Conference opponents Baldwin-Woodville and Ellsworth.

Against the Panthers Friday, the Cardinals won 68-55. Standout junior Isabella Lenz recorded a triple-double, with 21 points, 11 rebounds and 10 steals, while finding time to dish out five assists and block a shot.

Fellow junior Sydney Matzek and sophomore Erin Boatman both finished with 11 points and grabbed three boards. Junior Nicole Dahlman registered 10 points and seven rebounds while fellow classmate Tori Benck recorded five points and five assists.

Senior Ashley Rieken registered eight points and four rebounds for the Cardinals in the win.

The Tuesday prior, the Cardinals left Baldwin- Woodville victorious after a 47-42 win over the Blackhawks. Lenz again led with 18 points, eight boards, six assists, a pair of blocks and a steal. Dalman registered a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds to go along with three assists and a steal in the Cardinal’s win.

Senior Mckenna Johnson contributed another four points and six rebounds and sophomore Brynley Goehring registered four points and led the team with three steals.

In the Cardinal’s 66-49 loss in the first game of the week, Lenz led with 22 points, six rebounds and a pair of assists and steals.

Benck contributed 11 points and 5 rebounds and Dalman added another eight and four.

Prescott’s hard work this season is evident in their conference record, which includes no marks in the loss column in Middle Border Conference play. The Cardinals had an opportunity to clinch the outright league title with a win over Osceola at home on Tuesday following the printing of this publication. Coach Rob Radloff and his team have been working hard to prepare for something the program hasn’t accomplished in many years.

“We've been focused on this goal all season and it will mean a lot for us to win it,” Radloff said. “Our program has never had a Middle Border Conference championship and it will be a step in the right direction for Prescott Girls Basketball.”

The Cardinals travel to New Richmond the following Thursday to take on the second-inconference New Richmond Tigers before the WIAA Regional play starts.

“No matter what, we have to win games to meet our ultimate goal. Being the one or two seed gives us home court advantage,” Radloff stated.
