Staff report
Prescott, Ellsworth and Plum City/Elmwood all start WIAA Regional baseball play Thursday.
In Division 2, Prescott earned the number three seed and hosts St. Croix Central in game one. Number five Ellsworth travels to play at Amery. In Division 4, Plum City/Elmwood is the sixth seed, and they travel to play at Pepin/Alma.
In Division 3, Spring Valley is the top seed in its sectional. It has a bye round one and plays the winner of the Colfax-Mondovi game on Tuesday, June 15.
Cardinals finish strong
Prescott finished off its regular season this week with games against Osceola and Eau Claire Regis. The Cardinals went into the week with an 8-4 mark in the Middle Border Conference.
The Cardinals shelled Somerset Friday, 15-1, a day after winning 10-9 at St. Croix Central.
Against St. Croix Central, the Cardinals held on after the Panthers picked up four runs in the seventh inning.
Prescott jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning. With the bases loaded, Hayden Pattridge drew a walk, plating Mason Bartsch. Austin Fox then scored in similar fashion when Alex Holt drew a walk.
SCC picked up four runs in its half of the inning. Prescott trimmed the deficit to one when Pattridge singled, scoring Fox. The Panthers picked up a run in the third, and Fox hit a home run in the Prescott fourth to keep the Cardinals within a run.
Ben Rohl put the Cardinals on top with a double in the sixth that scored Bartsch and Fox.
Philip Seifert had a big hit to spark the three-run Prescott seventh, and he started off the rally with a double that brought in a run.
Against Somerset, Seifert drove in six runs on three hits. The Cardinals picked up 12 runs in the second inning with Fox, Seifert, Pattridge, Brady Block, Justin Syverson and Bartsch all knocking in runs in the inning. Syverson, Seifert and Kyle Holman each had multiple-hit games for Prescott.
Fox started on the mound for Prescott, allowing just a single hit in five innings. Seifert came on in relief and held Somerset hitless.
Pechacek homer lifts Panthers
The Ellsworth Panthers defeated St. Croix Central 3-1 last Wednesday on a two-run homer by Tanner Pechacek in the bottom of the fifth.
Ian Matzek got the Panthers going in the first, as he singled in a run.
Urban Broadway was the winning pitcher for Ellsworth. He pitched six innings, allowing just five hits while striking out eight. Beckett Catron pitched the final inning in relief.
Matzek was a perfect 2-2 at the plate for Ellsworth.
On Thursday, Ellsworth charged back with three runs in the bottom of the seventh, but it wasn’t quite enough, as they fell, 65, to Osceola. The big inning was started with a single by Jack Voelker and a two-run homer by Anthony Madsen.
Matzek and Chase Snyder also had runs batted in for Ellsworth, and Snyder led the team with two hits. Landen Edgar, Carter Pierce and Broadway shared pitching duties.
Ellsworth also had its comeback fall short at Amery Friday. The Panthers spotted Amery six runs in the first. Ellsworth put runs on the board in the last four innings, but it wasn’t enough. Amery came out on top, 7-5.
