Celebrating lifelong learning in River Falls with Community Education

Posted

Nov. 13, 2025, is National Community Education Day, and a time to reflect and celebrate our community and our strong River Falls Community Education program. The day offers a special opportunity to recognize how far we’ve come and to celebrate the connections and learning that continue to grow right here in River Falls.

River Falls Community Education (RFCE) took shape in 2010, born from a strong grassroots effort and shared district vision: to foster learning, build community, share resources, and open our schools to all. By 2011, the first classes were underway.

Over the years, we’ve offered a variety of classes, activities, events, and trips. Since its inception, more than 3,500 RFCE courses have engaged over 11,000 community members. Our success has even drawn the attention of other Wisconsin districts, which have reached out to replicate our program. Today, RFCE is recognized as a leader in community education across the state.

A few weeks ago I visited a fused glass art class. The room was filled with laughter, music, and creative energy as more than a dozen adult students worked on their unique art pieces. “I enjoyed this class a lot,” said RFCE student Margaret Smith. “It was my first time working with glass. The instructor was very helpful, as were fellow classmates who had glass experience.“ It was a joyful, inspiring evening - one that truly captures what community education is all about: bringing people together to learn, grow, and create at every age.

I encourage you to take advantage of all River Falls Community Education has to offer; learn a new skill, try something different, experience a class or show, or get involved by joining our advisory council.

As we celebrate National Community Education Day, I’m grateful for our program that thrives because of people like you: neighbors who believe in lifelong learning and the power of community connection. Thank you for helping make River Falls a place where learning, creativity, and connection thrive at every age.
