In May 1897, work started on a church at Waverly (corner of Highway 72 and County Road CC), according to “Look Back and Remember The First Fifty Years, Rock Elm Township, 1861-1911” by Lavern Flanders. The building was completed in July that year and Rev. Harvey held services in the new church, which served both Lutherans and Methodists. The simple wood frame building also served as a community gathering place for many functions, including revivals and religious services. Salvation Army and Free Will Baptists were also known to host services throughout the area.
As of March 29, 2023, the former community building is a shell caved in by heavy snow, tilting heavily toward the road. It won’t be long before another relic of Waverly’s past is rubble.
