County data shows most outbreaks don’t stem from schools

The latest statistics from Pierce County Public Health show that school settings aren’t where COVID-19 is spreading.

Pierce County School Districts have been scrambling to make plans for virtual schooling, but that’s largely because of staffing issues in the pandemic.

Of the 1,526 cases of COVID-19 reported in the county in the last month, just 52 of those listed the school setting as the likely source of infection.

The largest number of cases have spread from being acquired in the community, which is the likely source of 532 of the cases. Close contacts have led to 395 of the cases, while 352 have been acquired in households. Outbreaks of COVID-19 have been responsible for 123 of the cases, while 61 cases have been reported in care facilities, and travel was the cause of 11 of the cases.

The average age of the Pierce County COVID-19 patient is 38 in the last month, with 679 cases reported in people between 25-44 years of age, and 668 cases were reported between the ages of 668. There were 639 cases in people between the ages of 18-24. Ages 65-plus show 297 cases, and there were 276 between 0-17. Females make up 53 percent of the cases and males 47,.

Overall, there have been 2,339 confirmed cases of COVID-19, and 22 deaths reported as of Dec. 4. There also have been 443 probably cases. In the last week, there were 231 new cases reported, Pierce County Public Health data shows.
