County hoops round-up

The Prescott Cardinals girls’ basketball team was back in action at St. Croix Falls for a nonconference game Monday night after the printing of this publication. Looking ahead, the Cardinals are back in action Wednesday night when they host Dunn-St. Croix Conference opponent Durand. They also host the River Falls Wildcats on Tuesday, January 5th.

According to wissports.net, standout senior Isabella Lenz is averaging nearly 21 points per game so far this season. Fellow senior Nicole Dalman is also contributing 13.7 per night and leading the team with an average of nearly 12 rebounds per contest, while Lenz is nearly averaging a double-double with 9.7 boards per contest. Lenz is also recording an average of five assists per game.

Heading east for Plum City/Elmwood PC/E girls

Plum City/Elmwood’s girls’ hoops team (2-2) had their first game in over three weeks on Tuesday, December 29th at Independence (3-2) to wrap up 2020. Their first game of 2021 will be home at Elmwood High School, hosting Alma/Pepin on Tuesday, January 5th.

According to wissports.net, junior forward Maggie Glaus is leading the team with 15 points and 12 rebounds per game. Senior forward Anna Blanford isn’t far behind, scoring nearly 14 points and grabbing seven rebounds per contest. The Wolves will look to compete with the top teams in the Dunn-St. Croix Conference this season.

PC/E boys The Plum City/Elmwood boys were back in action last week, splitting a pair of games to start the week. On Monday, December 21st, the Wolves defeated Elk Mound, 49-47. The Wolves defense was on and held the Mounders to just 33% shooting from the field, including just seven of 34 shots from behind the arc. PC/E was led by Dayne Whipple’s 11 points. Basil Gilles and Tyler Bauer each netted nine, while Luke Webb and Zack Hartung chipped in seven points apiece. Webb and Gilles led in rebounding with eight each, while Bauer also recorded a pair of steals and a block.

The following night, the Wolves lost a tough game to Colfax, 63-48. After trailing by eight at halftime, the Vikings kept the foot on the gas in the second half. Webb led PC/E with 16 points, seven rebounds, five assists and four blocks. Gilles netted a dozen points and also grabbed six boards. Elijah Gansluckner, along with Bauer, each scored nine points while Bauer grabbed seven rebounds to tie Webb for most on the team. Whipple led the team with three of their five steals against the Vikings.

PC/E was back in action Tuesday, December 29th at Independence and host Alma/Pepin on Tuesday, January 5th in their first game of the New Year.

River Falls boys

After recording wins over Menomonie and Prescott, the Wildcats boys’ team recorded their first loss of the season last Tuesday, December 22nd at Eau Claire Memorial, 41-51. The Old Abes held the Wildcats to just three makes behind the arc out of 34 attempts. Senior Zac Johnson led the Wildcats with 10 points, while junior Jacob Landgraf and senior Liam Dougherty finished with nine and eight points, respectively. Seniors JT Dougherty and Victor Bye combined for another 11 points in the loss.

The Wildcats were back on the hardwood Tuesday night when they host New Richmond after last week’s game at Rice Lake was postponed. They also host Saint Croix Central on New Year’s Eve Day at 1:00 p.m. before traveling to Ellsworth on Saturday, January 2nd for a 7:00 p.m. game.

River Falls girls

The River Falls girls’ basketball team returned to the court Monday, December 28th at New Richmond after last week’s game at Menomonie was postponed. The Wildcats also hosted Somerset on Tuesday night to wrap up 2020. River Falls will host Eau Claire Memorial on Monday, January 4th in their first game of 2021.

According to wissports.net, senior guard Rachel Randleman is leading the Wildcats with 14 points and five rebounds per game.
