ELLSWORTH — Step back in time this August as the Ellsworth Public Library’s Discover Together Tuesday series presents a lively look at the origins of America’s pastime with Dustyn “Mad Dog” Dubuque, Captain of the Menomonie Blue Caps vintage base ball club.

The program will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 11 at the Ellsworth Senior Center, located in English Lutheran Church, 229 W. Main St., Ellsworth.

Guests are invited to “Hear Ye! Hear Ye! A Tale of Base Ball!”—a spirited journey to the days when the game was played barehanded, full of lively spirit, and governed by rules that would puzzle today’s fans.

The Menomonie Blue Caps, a vintage base ball club sponsored by the Dunn County Historical Society, will share stories and demonstrations of how base ball was originally played in the 19th century. Attendees will learn about the sport’s earliest traditions, when players wore wool uniforms, fielders caught fly balls without gloves, and every match blended sport, spectacle, and community celebration.

“You’ll hear tall tales and true history of the game in its earliest form,” Dubuque notes, offering a window into the colorful roots of America’s national pastime.

Following the program, guests are invited to stay for a complimentary lunch provided by the Ellsworth Senior Center and the Friends of the Ellsworth Public Library.

Discover Together Tuesday is a monthly intergenerational program designed to bring engaging speakers, demonstrations, and community connection opportunities to older adults and community members of all ages.
