There was plenty of local representation in this year’s USA High School Clay Target Championship that took place Friday through Sunday in Mason, Mich., with the Spring Valley Orange Crush competing as a team and individually, and the Ellsworth Claybreakers sending three individuals.
Spring Valley finished Friday’s team qualifier round in 149th place out of 240 teams. While it was not enough to reach the top-80 spot needed to qualify for the team finals, the five shooters scored 446 out of the 500 possible.
The Ellsworth Claybreakers sent Ethan Hinrichs, Levi Holt and Carter Moldenhauer to compete individually over the weekend.
Hinrichs led Ellsworth, shooting 99/100 to finish 38th place and advance to the championship round that took place Sunday. Moldenhauer shot 89/100 to take 1,069th and Holt finished just one shot behind at 88/100 in 1,174th place.
Competitors needed to finish in the top-400 of 1,715 shooters to make the final round, placing Hinrichs in the top-tier of competitors.
A 95/100 score in the finals landed Hinrichs in 220th place at the event. According to the team, Hinrichs also finished with the highest average in a season over the team’s history, finishing at 23.8/25 in the regular season.
Spring Valley sent six individuals to the competition to compete: Wyatt Goveronski, Jaxon Schultz, Ian Sabelko, Dominic Weber, Justin Rielly and Chase Rud.
None of the shooters qualified for the individual finals, with Goveronski leading the way, shooting 93/100, and landing in 617th place. Schultz and Sabelko shot 85, falling in 1,392nd and 1,423rd place. Weber shot an 84 to take 1,453rd place, Rielly shot an 83 to take 1,493rd place and Rud shot 71 for 1,685th place.
