Ellsworth Community School District Summer School offers something for everyone

While summer break gives students and staff a chance to relax and recharge, the halls of Ellsworth Elementary School were still buzzing with activity during the district's 15-day summer school program in June.

This summer, the district offered 29 different courses, giving students opportunities to strengthen academic skills, discover new interests and stay active. From math and reading classes to cake decorating, swimming lessons, speed and strength training, guitar and a variety of hands-on enrichment opportunities, there truly was something for everyone. And that's just at the elementary school. Older students also had opportunities to participate in programs such as Running Club, athletic camps and the district's summer agriculture program.

One of the greatest strengths of summer school is the variety it offers. Some students come to sharpen their reading or math skills, while others take the opportunity to try something completely new. Whether they're learning to decorate a cake, building confidence in the pool, or picking up a guitar for the first time, students have the chance to explore interests that may not fit into the regular school year.

The success of the program starts with the dedicated teachers and teacher assistants who make learning engaging and enjoyable every day. Their creativity and enthusiasm create classrooms where students are excited to participate, even though school is technically out for the summer.

The district is also fortunate to have dozens of middle school and high school students serving as classroom helpers. These student leaders assist teachers, work alongside younger students and provide positive role models throughout the program. Their willingness to give back is a great example of the supportive culture that exists throughout the Ellsworth Community School District.

"It's always great to see our buildings full of students during the summer," said Elementary Principal Jeremy Nygaard. "Summer school gives kids a chance to spend time with friends, try something they might not experience during the regular school year, and continue learning in a fun environment. The variety of classes is incredible and our staff does an outstanding job creating experiences that students are excited to be part of."

Beyond the learning that takes place in the classroom, summer school helps students stay connected with classmates, build relationships with staff and head into the new school year feeling confident and ready to learn.

Before summer comes to an end, the district also offers its Jump Start program. Held over four days in early August, Jump Start helps ease the transition back to school for our youngest learners and for students preparing to make the move to middle school.

"I also want to thank our teachers, support staff, student helpers, families, and students for making this year's program such a success," Nygaard said. "It takes a lot of people working together to make summer school possible, and we're fortunate to have a community that values learning and is willing to invest in opportunities like these for our students."
