The Ellsworth Village Board last night gave Police Chief Eric Ladwig the ok to hire two new part time officers. Chief Ladwig recommended the hiring of two local candidates, Jonathan Nack and Jarid Kerber. “We wanted to move fast with them so they don’t get hired elsewhere,” said Ladwig. “Currently we’re struggling with some of our scheduling, forcing some officers to work. We filled out backgrounds on a couple part timers (and) swore them in this morning,” he told to the village board.
In his report to the board, Chief Ladwig said January numbers were as follows: 52 parking citations, four traffic citations and one ordinance citation, for a total of 57 for the month of January. When it came to the arrests for the month, there were 22 resulting from traffic stops, two OWI arrests, ten probation arrests, three unspecified arrests, and no warrants, for a total of 15. One DA referral was not arrested, and there were also two juvenile referrals. Lastly, there were 265 calls for service in the month of January.
In other business, the village board unanimously approved a new five year lease with the Department of Natural Resources. Village President Gerald DeWolfe credited City Clerk-Treasurer Peggy Nelson for getting the deal finalized. The DNR leases space in the lower level of the village hall. The lease term is five years.
“Please be advised that we are exercising the 5-year renewal option included in the lease covering the space occupied by the Department of Natural Resources in the building located at 130 Chestnut Street in the City of Ellsworth, Wisconsin,” Richard Rieser wrote the village as Real Estate Transaction Manager for the State. “This option is to cover the period from November 1, 2019 to October 31, 2024 at the initial monthly rental rate of $443.43,” he wrote via email from the Wisconsin Department of Administration.
The Journal would also like to clarify that the village is hiring an administrator/clerktreasurer to replace the retiring clerk-treasurer Peggy Nelson. Nelson is retiring after 35 years on the job in May.
