ELLSWORTH - Melissa Petersen, an attorney, health coach, fitness instructor, and single mother of 10 from Ellsworth, is advancing as a quarterfinalist in the national 2026 Ms. Health & Fitness Competition, a contest recognizing women who embody strength, resilience, and positive community impact.

At age 50, Petersen balances raising her 10 children while running a law practice, coaching others in health and wellness, teaching fitness, and staying active in her community. Her journey into health and fitness began after overcoming significant personal challenges earlier in life, including abuse and health struggles that required her to rebuild both her physical and emotional strength.

"What started as a personal journey to reclaim my health eventually turned into a passion for helping other women believe in themselves again," Petersen said. "I want women to know that no matter what they have been through or what stage of life they are in, it is never too late to become stronger."

Petersen's story is rooted in small-town western Wisconsin, where she has long been active in community service. She has volunteered with the Ellsworth Community School District, served as a Girl Scout leader, and participated in the elementary school parent club. She also previously served on the Pierce County Board, working on issues affecting local families and the community.

In addition to practicing law, Petersen works as a health and mindset coach and fitness instructor, focusing on helping women rebuild confidence, health, and purpose. Her coaching work often centers on overcoming limiting beliefs, improving physical health, and helping women rediscover their strength after difficult life circumstances.

Petersen says one of the most meaningful parts of the competition is the opportunity to represent western Wisconsin and inspire women in the community who may feel stuck or discouraged in their health journeys.

"I hope women in our area see that it is possible to rebuild your life and your health, no matter where you start," Petersen said. "If my story encourages even one person to believe in themselves again, then it is worth it."
