Elmwood Fire battles night-time garage blaze

ELMWOOD – A garage fire lit up the night sky in the wee hours of Sunday, March 19 in Elmwood but luckily no one was injured.

Elmwood Area Fire Department responded to a garage fire at 3:30 a.m. at 229 W. Shaw Ave. Pierce County land records list the property owners as Luke and Julie Breeggemann.

Elmwood Fire Chief Collin Gilles said crews battled the fire for about three hours. Luckily, no one was inside at the time and no one was hurt. One of the homeowners heard a loud popping noise and woke up.

“The garage was not connected to the house and only spread to a vehicle parked next to the garage outside,” Gilles said. “The garage had lots of items inside including vehicles, but exactly what I am unsure.”

A post on the Breeggemann’s Facebook page said the metal pole-building style garage contained tools, an old Ford truck, a Camaro, a side-by-side and four-wheelers. All of it is a total loss.

Gilles said the cause, which is undetermined at this point, appears to be either electrical or from a vehicle that was parked inside. Foul play is not suspected.

Spring Valley, Ellsworth and Plum City/Town of Union fire departments also responded.
