TOWN OF ROCK ELM – An Elmwood man died Saturday as a result of being struck by a falling hay bale.
Pierce County deputies responded at 8:38 a.m. Jan. 14 to the scene at N5427 County Road S in the town of Rock Elm. A 1998 Peterbilt 379 tractor-trailer, driven by Raymond James Leffingwell, 66, Wanamingo, Minn., was parked on the west side of the road, delivering hay to the farm. John Richard Robey, 60, Elmwood, was walking on the passenger side of the semi’s trailer when a large square hay bale fell from the trailer and landed on top of him.
Leffingwell said Robey had asked him to back up and he may have been completing that maneuver when the load shifted and the hay bale fell off the 2009 Load King flatbed trailer.
Elmwood Ambulance Service transported Robey to Western Wisconsin Health in Baldwin, where he was pronounced deceased. Leffingwell was not injured.
Elmwood Fire and Baldwin Ambulance Service also assisted at the scene.
