The Elmwood Expos are finding their groove at the right time, and it is largely coming off the backs of a pitching one-two punch. Elmwood made the finals of the Class B State Championship last year, but they are looking for it all this time around.
Mason Dado and Eli Ponath have been locked in on the mound of late. Dado tossed a complete game in a 4-1 win over Prescott over the weekend, and before the Independence Day break, he strung together some great starts including a seven-inning, one earned run outing in a 6-2 win over Bay City on June 15. Back in May, Elmwood got its revenge against the Osceola team that beat them in the State finals a year ago. Dado threw yet another gem as the Expos won 3-2. Ponath went for a complete game of his own, allowing just two hits and striking out 15 batters in a 4-0 win over a great Hudson squad early in the year. In the season-opening doubleheader against the Minneapolis Golden Sombreros, Dado threw seven innings, allowing two runs and accumulating 19 strikeouts out of 21 total outs. Ponath started the first game, tossing five innings with just one hit allowed.
It is not just those two, though, as Brecken Ponath has also put together a nice year, often called upon out of the bullpen with the game on the line.
Cody Holden came up big in the win over Prescott, whacking a pair of doubles and driving in two runs in the win. Dado, Wyatt Sundby and Adam Churchill have been the three spearheading the offense thus far for the Expos.
This week, the Expos take on Spring Valley on July 16, the Leinies Legends on the 17th, Plum City on July 19 and Hudson on July 20. It is somewhat of a super week with four games and three of them being league games. The season closes out at the end of July, with the Expos hoping for a playoff push.
