EPC bats a force to be reckoned with despite opening week losses

ELMWOOD — EPC softball had a 0-2 week to open the year, but the bats are absolutely on fire, and the Wolves showed a lot to look forward to over the coming months.

The opener was a wild one for EPC. Cochrane Fountain City got the scoring started in the top of the second with a run, which the Wolves matched in the bottom of the inning on a line drive single to left from Reese DeLong. CFC scored two more in the third, and EPC countered right back with Macy Garfield reaching on an error from a bunt and Adda Ingli driving in Brittany Bechel on a groundout.

CFC then began to pull away, scoring three in the fourth, three in the fifth and two in the sixth to lead 11-3. EPC found a rally, though, with Hannah Fesenmaier bunting one home in the bottom of the sixth, followed by a run scoring on a passed ball and another on a walk to cut the deficit to 11-6 after six. CFC was blanked in the top of the seventh before handing the bats to the Wolves, who again started to rally highlighted by a liner to the left side by Aspen Hines to cut the CFC lead to 11-9. A passed ball brought EPC within a run with two outs and runners on second and third. Bechel smacked a single to left and the game was brought all the way back to an 11-11 tie before CFC escaped the inning.

Pitcher Lexi Snapp, who went the distance in the game, got through the eighth with ease, giving the Wolves a chance to win it in extra innings. EPC did not capitalize, allowing CFC to hit a double and bunt the runner home in the ninth to finally finish the job in a wild nine-inning bout.

Against Clear Lake, Fesenmaier bunted home a run in the first, but Clear Lake scored four in the third and four in the fifth in what would seemingly put the Wolves to bed. What the Wolves have shown through two games is that they are never quite out of a game, scoring a whopping seven in the bottom of the fifth to pull the score to 9-8 in Clear Lake’s favor. The Wolves’ run was halted there, though, with Clear Lake pulling out an 11-9 nailbiter.

The game was a big night for EPC at the plate, with Bechel, Ingli, Fesenmaier and Hines each tallying two hits and Abby Krings securing one. As the season goes on and the team naturally starts to gel in the field, having a list of hitters that can get it done makes the Wolves a threat.
