PRESCOTT — Do you have an exotic pet you can no longer care for? J&R Aquatic Animal Rescue (JRAAR), in partnership with the Great River Road Visitor and Learning Center, invites the public to a free Exotic Pet Surrender Event from noon to 3 p.m. Friday, Aug. 9.

This compassionate, judgment-free opportunity allows pet owners to surrender exotic animals that have become unmanageable, unwanted, or are no longer a good fit—no questions asked.

Accepted animals include fish, invertebrates, reptiles, pet birds, small mammals, and even plants. Domestic animals such as dogs, cats, rabbits, and chickens will not be accepted and should be directed to a local shelter.

“Invasive species often begin as pets that were never meant to be released into the wild,” said Macy Yohr, Invasive Species Specialist at JRAAR. “Events like this one offer a responsible and humane alternative—one that protects both the animals and our ecosystems.”

The event will feature live animal ambassadors, educational resources, and a fun photo booth where guests can capture moments with rescued animals. After undergoing a short quarantine period, many surrendered animals will become available for adoption through JRAAR’s network.

This important event is made possible by a coalition of conservation and advocacy partners, including the Pet Advocacy Network, University of Wisconsin Sea Grant/Water Resources Institutes, and Great River Road Visitor and Learning Center. Generous sponsorship support is provided by Petco Love.

J&R Aquatic Animal Rescue is Wisconsin’s #1 exotic pet rescue, dedicated to providing responsible rehoming options and raising awareness about the environmental risks of released pets.
