When Gregg Nelson and his wife moved to Ellsworth two years ago with their four dogs and five cats, they wanted to find a place where they could feel part of a community. They found that place at the Family Dollar store in Ellsworth’s Midtown.
When Nelson and his wife adopted Bentley, a long-haired German Shepherd, the breeder gave them a list of places that welcome animals. Family Dollar was on that list. Bentley has been a regular visitor there since he was a puppy. He’s become the unofficial mascot of the store.
“We spent two years socializing our dog Bentley by sitting him by the checkout lane,” Nelson said. “He’s been coming here since he was a puppy. Some people go right to him and say he’s so cute, or ‘You’ve made my day.’”
Assistant manager Savannah Coss said many of their senior customers love Bentley because it reminds them of when they had a dog. Nelson said Bentley has brought some of them to happy tears.
“I remember one woman in her 60s who hadn't had her own dog in years but cried into him,” he said. “So many have really bonded with him and he makes people happy. I let him camp out and he’ll peek around the corner and he loves kids.”
Nelson and Bentley visit Family Dollar every two or three days. Bentley has won the hearts of children, senior citizens, big construction guys, and everyone in between, Nelson said. He’s a gentle giant with a loving and loyal heart.
“Anytime anyone comes in here and he hears a noise, his ears perk right up,” Coss said.
Varnado said when construction jackhammering was going on in the space next door, Bentley was especially curious. But nothing holds his attention like the treats the staff keep for him behind the counter. He knows right where they are and will do as many tricks as he can to earn them.
“So many people get some time with Bentley and it's an amazing community vibe in a town that needs one,” Nelson said. “Many people who come through the line have seen him before, and most of those who haven't, get a good vibe! Maybe you can meet him too.”
Family Dollar is located at 181 E. Main St. in the Midway Shopping Center.
