Four home runs boost Pirates to statement win over Fighting Fish

RIVER FALLS – There was a lot of buzz at First National Bank of River Falls Field Saturday night, but the Prescott Pirates quieted the crowd with a 9-5 win.

This was the third of four home games during the River Falls Days week for the Fighting Fish, and the game kicked off with Hall of Fame induction ceremonies for former Fighting Fish players Adam Stuessel and Clint Kempf.

River Falls entered the game with a 25-2 record (11-1 in St. Croix Valley league play), and despite an errorless game in the field, were outmatched by four Prescott home runs.

It was River Falls that got out to a first inning lead after Brian Giebel doubled and Spencer Diedrich launched a one-out two-run home run.

Prescott’s Logan Jordan gave the Pirates one of these runs right back in the second inning, leading off the inning with a no-doubt home run.

That was not all the Fighting Fish would see from Jordan, as a second home run to left field in the fourth inning drove in Peter Brookshaw, giving the Fighting Fish a 3-2 lead.

“I was just sitting fastball, and he ended up hanging the changeup and I was on time for it,” Jordan said.

Third baseman Billy Brookshaw gave Jordan a lot of credit for the team’s win, as he drove in the team’s first three runs before the rest of the offense clicked.

“He’s kind of that instant offense type kid,” Billy Brookshaw said. “It took everybody else three, four, five innings to really get working.”

In the fifth, an Al Helmer single, a Hunter Daymond single and a Billy Brookshaw walk loaded the bases for shortstop Peter Brookshaw. A single brought in a pair of runs, and a Jordan single re-loaded the bases. Back-to-back strikeouts from River Falls pitcher Kyle Fritz limited the damage at 5-2.

Both squads brought in a run thanks to some small ball in the sixth. Kevin Woebke delivered a home run in the seventh to boost the Pirate lead to 7-3.

The bottom of the seventh inning was the last of the scoring for the Fighting Fish, as Ty Denzer walked to drive in a run. Woebke entered the game to pitch, allowing a sacrifice fly to Ragan Pinnow before closing the door on the inning.

Daymond homered in the eighth, with a bat flip and an electric dugout celebration following.

Woebke closed the game out on the mound for a 9-5 win.

Billy Brookshaw said the team was ready for River Falls to come right at them with no fear, but the team did not cave, forcing pitching mistakes.

“We knew their pitching was going to throw strikes, and that’s what they did,” Billy Brookshaw said. “Later in the game that’s when we got to them.”

Billy Brookshaw spoke highly of Woebke’s ability to close the door as he did in nearly three innings of work against River Falls after relieving Evan Bayer. Brookshaw also said a win like this can show the players they can compete with anyone.

“We’ve struggled the whole year for the most part,” Billy Brookshaw said. “So being able to come in here and beat a team that’s a really good team, a quality team, the best team maybe in the entire state, is a big confidence thing for us.”

Jordan cited the team’s ability to work at-bats and avoid strikeouts as the primary reasons for the win. Jordan said it took everyone to beat a team as good as River Falls.

“The whole team kind of put together and played pretty good,” Jordan said. “It was a good Prescott win.”

Prescott returns to action Friday on the road against Osceola as its lone game of the weekend. River Falls takes on Red Wing at home Wednesday, Ellsworth on the road Saturday and Elmwood on Sunday in Elmwood to round out the weekend.
