Freedom Park column: Goodbye 2023, Welcome 2024

What a year Freedom Park - Great River Road Visitor and Learning Center has experienced! A tremendous year it has been, with many new programs having been produced. New and treasured volunteers helped out in many capacities, the center saw the completion of Phase I of the building refresh, a new executive director was hired (Linda Schenk), and our four-year Board of Directors President Jeff Ruehle retired in December. We will miss him but wish him all the best! (We know he won’t be able to stay away for that long). Our small non-profit saw it all this year and we couldn’t be happier!

2024 is poised to be an even more exciting year for our center. Our programming line-up is shaping up to be an exciting array of family friendly, free offerings for the town of Prescott and for travelers. There will be many new and exciting events to educate, entertain, and enlighten those who attend. Our website (www.freedomparkwi.org) hosts a new feature, a Google calendar showing each month’s activities. Easy to see and easy to use, check it out. New partnerships are forming as well. We can’t run our center by ourselves, it takes a village to accomplish what we do and it is always nice to welcome new people and new organizations to our village. We always welcome new volunteers to join one of our many needed areas such as; garden group, welcome desk attendant, event support, Board of Directors, and other miscellaneous things such as photography. If you have an interest or any questions about volunteering, please contact Linda Schenk directly by email (linda.schenk@freedomparkwi.org) with your interest and questions. You can also check out our website volunteer tab.

Phase II of our building refresh will be one of our central focuses for the new year. We will be bringing the learning component back into our center. We are exploring how to create new exhibits and feature some rotational exhibits as well. This will be an exciting year to watch as our center fills back up again with relevant and educational offerings for all. Our tremendous Board of Directors welcomes our new President Jared Schmitz to his official position in January. Jared will be a wonderful leader for our very dedicated team of individuals that make up our Board of Directors.

We are very grateful for the continued support that our center receives. Prescott residents, local companies, travelers, surrounding communities, foundations, and grant support keep our center the “Gem of Prescott.” We are supported not only financially but with in-kind donations of many kinds. As we end our fiscal year, if you would like to contribute a monetary gift to help us end our year strong we would welcome the support. Our small non-profit is eternally grateful to all!

Wishing you all a joyous and safe end of 2023. Looking forward to seeing you in 2024 for another spectacular year together!
