Freedom Park column: Stewards of Freedom Park

Posted

The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines a Steward (noun) as a person who manages something that is entrusted to one’s care. This is exactly how we like to refer to our volunteers: they are stewards who look after Freedom Park and the Great River Road Visitor and Learning Center (GRRVLC). We all have an appreciation for what Freedom Park and the Great River Road Visitor and Learning Center brings to our community. We are a community that strives to keep Freedom Park and the GRRVLC the “Gem of Prescott” a place that we can all be proud of.

We are a small non-profit with a mighty mission! Our organization only has one full-time employee, the executive director and a small but very engaged board of directors. Volunteers are the backbone of our organization; we could not accomplish what we do each year without the support of the many people who have selflessly given of their time. We very much appreciate all that our volunteers do for our park and center!

As the 2024 travel season approaches, we are looking for new volunteers to help out at the park and the Great River Road Visitor and Learning Center. There is a wonderful sense of belonging amongst those who volunteer here. We are a community that welcomes people who have volunteered before but have since fallen away or those who have never volunteered here before. All are welcome here at the center! All ages and skill levels are welcome! We have something for everyone. We have a variety of tasks that we need help with such as: grounds/garden work, welcome desk, event support, retail, and Board of Directors. We also need help with communications, graphic design, photography, stuffing envelopes, bird feeder maintenance, and just about everything in between. The amount of time spent volunteering is also dependent on what a person feels they can give. If you have time to come and help out weekly that is great. If you have time to come and help out one time a month that is also great.

The center is hosting a Volunteer Awareness Event from 1-2 p.m. Sunday, Feb 25 in the River Room. There will be light refreshments served. The executive director, the board of directors, and other volunteers will be on hand to help explain all the exciting opportunities that you can assist with, and they will help answer all of your questions.

We welcome you to come on Feb. 25 and learn about how you can become a part of our team of Stewards! If you cannot attend the event and have questions and or want to sign-up to volunteer please get a hold of Linda Schenk at linda.schenk@freedomparkwi.org We look forward to meeting you and working with you this year!
