Freedom Park column: Summer Festival comes to Freedom Park

Posted

Summer has returned to Prescott’s Freedom Park and the cycle of life continues as it has for millennia at this rare and beautiful place situated along the steep buffs that define the confluence of the Mississippi and St. Croix rivers. Kayaks, pleasure boats and barges may have replaced the steamboat travelers of previous generations, but some 300+ migratory birds still make the annual round-trip flight from Canada to the Gulf coast along these waterways.

Preservation of this irreplaceable treasure did not happen by chance. Foresight, patience, countless volunteers, lobbying and successful fundraising all helped to create two national parks, an American Scenic Byway, and the Great River Road Visitor & Learning Center right here in our own backyard. The St. Croix National Scenic Riverway stretches 200 miles of the Namekagon and St. Croix rivers on the borders of Minnesota and Wisconsin. It is joined at the confluence of these two mighty rivers in Prescott by the 72-mile stretch of the Mississippi National River and Recreation Area.

To make this even better, The Great River Road National Scenic Byway connects vehicular travelers from the headwaters of the Mississippi in Lake Itasca, Minn. through downtown Prescott and connects Freedom Park to this 3,000-mile journey along the Mississippi to the Gulf.

The Great River Road Visitor & Learning Center was built at Freedom Park in 2006 to provide opportunities for visitors to discover and enjoy the unique environmental legacy, history and beauty of this extraordinary region.

The Friends of Freedom Park is the not-for-profit 501(c)3 created in 2006 to steward and preserve this wonderful place for generations to come. To that end, we rely on the time, talent, and generous support of our donors, volunteers and travelers to make this happen.

All of this was a preamble to announce our Summer Festival at Freedom Park!

Save the date for a fun-filled two days from 6-9 p.m. Friday, Aug. 11 and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 12. Friday night will host a family friendly concert in our amphitheater. Music will be provided by Mayfair 3. A freewill donation to attend the concert will be accepted at the amphitheater entrance. Saturday will host a food booth by Philander’s restaurant, a bar, treat booths, BINGO, auction/raffle, music, a kid’s carnival area, animals, history display, and so much more. Please come to support Freedom Park at this fundraiser.

We would like to thank the Prescott Tourism Committee for supporting our fundraising efforts! Please consider coming on Friday night and staying until Saturday at one of our many hotels and AirBnBs. Additional information can be found at www.freedomparkwi.org, on our Facebook site and in the Pierce County Journal. We look forward to seeing you at the event and pre-thank you for your support!
