The Pierce County Dairy Promotion Committee hosted a Milk and Cookies with Santa event at the Peterson Dairy Farm outside of River Falls on Saturday, Dec. 14.  Visitors could visit dairy cows, tell Santa their Christmas wishes, eat cookies with milk, explore farm machinery and play in a corn box.

The Petersons milke 280 dows three times a day. It takes two people at each shift to milk them. The cows are milked in a double 10 herringbone parlor. Ten cows are mioked on each side for a total of 20 cows in the milking parlor at a time. Herringone means that they are milked from the sides verses from the back of the cow.

Cows are brought to the milking parlor in the group they are with in the barn. There are four groups of cows (pens) in the barn. The cows remain in their same group all day.

The Petersons' cows milk an average of 94 pounds of milke per cow per day. This is roughly 11 gallons of milk per cow per day.

The milk is stored in a cooled bulk tank. The bulk tank holds 6,500 galls of amilk (a semi load). The milk is picked up form the farm and brought to Kemps where it is made into ice cream or milk.
